Not appropriate for kids; VERY disappointed!

I bought this for my 9 year old son and decided to read it first. I am sorry that I also purchased the sequel. As a mother and English teacher, I do not recommend these books for kids. The sentence structure is poor and too long for children. The vocabulary is extremely complex. I have discovered error after error in punctuation and spelling. The story is told in first person from Mario's point of view and reads as if Mario is fighting in a real battle, with numerous references to pulling out a gun (for fireballs). The title, "Diary of..." can be deceiving for those interested in other "Diary of..." children's literature series. This series is better left for adult fans of Super Mario that enjoy fan fiction. If you're looking for quality fan fiction for kids, I'd recommend the author Mark Cheverton.

LOTS of errors in book - Maybe not the most appropriate for 6 yo. I tend to skim over some areas when reading it to my kid, but he loves it. I've had to suffer the book 4 times since christmas. :(

Paterson shows how special people can make you become better. Many children (and adults) in today’s society gravitate ...

Jess has spent all summer working to be “the very best” runner in the 5th grade, but when a mysterious girl named Leslie kills that dream, she opens up a whole new world for him (2). Leslie leads Jess into Terabithia, where they reign as king and queen and Leslie works to, “push back the walls of his mind” (160). Paterson is doing the same thing to her readers as Leslie does to Jess; she is expanding the walls of our minds. Leslie makes allusions to many literary works which in turn teaches new vocabulary. For instance, she uses the word “regicide” and then gives context by mentioning Hamlet (67). Not only does this section teach readers a new word, but it also introduces them to Shakespeare. The Newbery Medal is given based on the text of the book, and when reading The Bridge To Terabithia, one can see why it won the honor. The story not only teaches through literary allusions, but also uses colloquial speech to show the poverty stricken region that Jess lives in. While Jess’ uses of “Lord” is controversial and one of the reasons the book is placed on banned lists, it gives the feel of life in the Appalachians. The book would not be as powerful if it were not true to life, and the language creates this truthfulness. Paterson is working to give her readers a larger world view (again, pushing back the walls of our minds). Through Jess teaching Leslie and Bill how to fix their house, they learn about rural living. Both children teach each other about their respective ways of life, and subsequently the reader learns as well. It shows how friendships between people from different backgrounds can push each other beyond themselves. Leslie taught Jess about the academic world, and Jess taught Leslie to be kind to others who don’t deserve it (such is the case with Janice Avery). Paterson shows how special people can make you become better. Many children (and adults) in today’s society gravitate towards those who are like themselves. The popular kids hang out with each other, the band nerds stick together, the honor students spend time together, etc. Paterson is showing children how diversity can be a highly rewarding factor in a friendship. Controversies aside, this book is an excellent tool for teaching children an array of lessons and is a joy to read.

OH MY GOD WHY DID I READ THIS AGAIN

This book was a punch in the gut as a fifth grader nearly thirty years ago. As an adult it's a beating with a padlock in a sock. Just non-stop blow after blow because now after college English classes you know about things like foreshadowing and symbolism and dramatic irony and YOU SEE IT COMING FROM MILES AWAY AND CAN DO NOTHING TO STOP IT.

I've read Martin. I'm used to not getting attached to vibrant, likable characters. But this still hits harder than the Red Wedding. Especially the aftermath. Because you're an adult now and your adult fears are different than your fears as a kid. This only heightens the contrast between Jesse's juvenile fear of falling into the creek and the reader's more mature fear of losing a loved one and makes the characters' pain stand out in that much more stark a contrast.

And that's not even getting into the theme of "If I had only..." that Jesse struggles with when he wakes in the night. If I had only asked her. If I had only thought of someone else. If I had only seen what was right in front of me instead of yearning for that which I cannot have. We've all had those moments, and we've all thought of what we could have done differently. The stakes are not always as high, but we are terrifyingly aware that we don't know when they might be.

The prose is exceedingly well-written. It's clear, almost matter-of-fact. Echoes of Narnia can be felt in Terebithia, especially in the Pine Grove. But the narrator never talks down to the reader. We see the world, and Leslie, through Jesse's eyes, but the story is far from childish. It doesn't pull its punches, but it takes care to show us beauty, too.

It should still come with a warning label and a box of kleenex, though. Not gonna lie; at almost 40 this one broke me, and I ain't even ashamed.

A heartfelt story full of wonder, self-realization, and turns of adventure around every corner. A boy named Jesse Aarons is an outcast who soon befriends the new girl in town who turns out to be an outcast as well. Together, they build a magical kingdom they can escape to until tragedy in the real world strikes.
This book can be used in the classroom to analyze coming of age, wealth disparities, imagination of the mind, how to cope with bullying, and how to deal with emotions involving death as well. It can bring up these issues for good conversation among students. It has won a Newbery Award for these themes and issues as well, creating authentic reading for students and even adults. I believe this book has become so popular for its realistic meaning in the classroom. Students can read it and grasp some of these different themes and areas of issue, maybe even relating to them.

Mix of science fiction, romance and BDSM

This book is an odd mix of genres - science fiction, romance and BDSM.

The published blurb is incorrect. We meet the crew of the spy ship Krastos. Tom is initially interested in Becca, but she doesn't return the favor, instead she gets upset with him when he voices what he considers to be his very reasonable and considered reservations about their fellow crew member Da'shay, the crazy alien Genta who gets on his nerves. Of course, everyone gets on Tom's nerves, he's naturally inclined to be suspicious and distrusting, but Da'shay is definitely odd, even by Genta standards.

And so a very unusual relationship begins. Tom acts foolishly, his captain is furious with him, Becca upset and Da'shay seems... well she doesn't seem to take his mistake in the way it was intended. And lots of action follows - they are trying to figure out why their last job went so disastrously wrong, Tom is trying to figure out Da'shay is up to, and Da'shay is trying to find the words that scurry like mice through her brain.

There was also some very hot bdsm scenes, that felt totally believeable, and some nice payback for villains and exonerations for beings who weren't as villainous as we first thought.

This is an expensive eBook, I paid $8.77 and it's 6609 locations, so a shortish book- 200 pages? but it is a dense book, with lots going on and I was happy to find it and rate it a keeper and reread. It's the second book of Lyn Gala's that I've read, and she has become an author to watch out for.

I’ve mainly read Gala’s M/M sci-fi romances, with Turbulence being the only M/F romance of hers that I’ve read prior to Blowback. So I was excited to read this book. In fact, I was anticipating reading it so much that I waited until the review was due to read it because I wanted it to last as long as possible because once I finished it, I had no idea how long I would have to wait for another of Gala’s sci-fi romances. I am both kicking my own metaphorical arse for not enjoying Blowback sooner, while at the same time, basking in the afterglow of a story that was so worth the wait that the anticipation was worth it.

This is not your typical romance and not because there are aliens involved. The animosity and distrust Tom has for Da’shay is so strong, you feel it through the pages. When a mission goes bad and a “concerned” party approaches Tom with information about Da’shay that reinforces his ill-feelings toward her, he does the wrong thing for the right reason and ends up having to choose between charges of treason or death. Once he makes peace with his choice, Da’shay steps in and prevents his death, leaving Tom bewildered as he’s made no secret of his feelings toward her. After a series of events ends up with Tom being relegated to slave status with Da’shay claiming ownership of him, Tom’s dislike ratchets up to hate as he tries to figure out whether to kill Da’shay or himself. But when Tom is forced to listen to Da’shay and really hear what it is she is trying to say, his opinion of her takes a 180 and the woman he would have taken pleasure in killing, is now the woman he wants to make happy. But with war looming and Tom, Da’shay and the crew of the Kratos finding themselves smack dab in the middle of it and a possible conspiracy, can Tom trust his newfound faith in Da’shay and his need to protect her outside of the ship, while submitting to her in the bedroom?

I loved this book. Not to spoil the story, but due to a procedure that was performed on Da’shay, her pattern of speech is not normal – not even for a genta. The way she talks in riddles reminded me of the Firefly character, River Tam. As Firefly was one of my favorite television shows, I loved how Da’shay’s character was reminiscent of River – although as the book was written before the television show was aired, it should be the other way around, but I “knew” River first. Once I learned to speak Da’shay’s language, it was much easier to understand what she was trying to communicate. Even though Tom was basically forced to listen to Da’shay, I liked that once she finally got through to him, he was willing to reassess the situation and his feelings toward her changed – for the better. I’m sure that the fact the sex between the two of them was scorchingly hot did not hurt his position one bit. I’m not big on the whole submissive male storyline, but I loved it in Blowback and felt like Gala did an excellent job of balancing Tom’s alpha male tendencies outside of the bedroom, with his willingness to submit to Da’shay inside the bedroom. Blowback was an excellent sci-fi romance with just the right amount of action, intrigue, and erotica that kept me glued to my Kindle.

Characters are well done

Oh my goodness! Jane from Serenity has his own book. Well, okay, the main character Tom in this book seems to be just like Jane from the movie Serenity (aka TV show Firefly). Tom is similar to Jane in that he is a shoot first and ask questions later kind of guy. Tom is a simple man. Anything too complicated isn't his cup of tea. He is a man who will follow orders only if he agrees with the one giving orders. What he doesn't like is a half breed alien who makes no sense and he figures she's a danger to his entire crew, especially his captain. This blue skin beyotch is Da'shay. Da'shay is unable to communicate effectively. In some ways, she talks like River in Serenity. Except Da'shay is a better written character.

The characters in this book are really well done. I liked them, even anti-hero Tom. What I also enjoyed is the sexual slavery undertones and the Femdom. This is very nice as somehow, Tom ends up as Da'shay's slave. This is why the book is not rated higher--jarring transitions. There are some pieces to this story that are not well connected. Some of the scenes, specifically when Tom gets into trouble that make absolutely no sense to me. It is frustrating because this world is kept tantalizingly vague.

I understand the point is that we are as lost and clueless as Da'shay is in her mind. At one point, one would think some of the unanswered questions would finally be resolved. This is not the case. With no sequel apparently on the horizon, readers will feel frustration, similar to those who liked Firefly when the show ended prematurely. I do not like premature action. Hopefully Ms. Gala will return to this world and give us more. For example, what is a Diamond? I am dying to know.

There is so much mystery surrounding Da'shay which is hinted at but never fully confirmed. With the ending to this story rushed to a closure, I'm left hanging. It is like a strong building climax that is suddenly ruined right as I'm about to go over the edge. Hopefully Ms. Gala will provide a satisfying sequel or a tasty trilogy. This space opera is recommended to sci-fi fans who also enjoy a bit of female domination.

The Love Story Continues

I took a composition class in college and a 'published' auther was in the class, a 30'ish woman who had about a dozen romance books published. She said that writing romance novels was easy because there is a basic plot outline that ALL rommance novels follow, girl meets guy, girl loses guy, there is a war or tsunami or pestilence, then girl mets guy again, girl gets guy. This is a femdom cuckold book. We know what is going to happen, but the devil is in the details. An author can focus on the action that we all know (and want) to happen. But the better author first gets inside the mind of the reader and starts pushing our buttons which manipulate us, just as strongly as Jenny manipulates John. Chas plays the reader perfectly, pushing the right buttons of pain, pleasure, anger, humiliation and...love. Chas's head games draw us in like a hand around our heart, or something else. And then...the real action begins.

Reading this book has been such an insightful revelation, that I really do not know where or how to begin. Firstly,Amazon needs to revise its grading system... if I could give this 10 stars I would. A practical, humorous and essential companion, OVERLOAD by Joyce Meyer has to be on your bookshelf.
Not far into the book, I found myself saying...'that's me,' over and over again. Then I discovered I was only at the introduction! Joyce has such an in-depth understanding of the human heart that is both reassuring and comforting. As I turned each page I felt a peace descend upon me and relief that I am not the only one...I felt I was in a therapy session. Thank you to Joyce for writing this great book - it's the best one I have read...ever!

Get this and the book! What a great deal!

Simple easy to read and practical! We all know most of it but when it is explained like this and laid out so you can actually apply it in your life, that is just what the doctor ordered (literally). I was so stressed out that reading the book on stress, stressed me out (that's bad). Little by little I started to incorporate what she teaches and now love the way I feel. I still have stress but I recognize it and it doesn't effect me like it did before. Most of the time we just pass up and skip the study guide, this is one case the study guide was great to have. Highly recommend!

A good read for someone overwhelmed by stress

I have been drowning in an overload of family and health problems for the last few years. This book could not have come out at a more perfect time in my life. I had been seeing a counselor for help with the stress but once I started reading Joyce's new book and applying what I read, in my own life, have I been able to discontinue the counseling sessions and go forward with a new outlook on life and how to handle the stressful situations that may come, leaning on Him who is always with me.
