Daniel Klein is the coauthor (with Thomas Cathcart) of the international bestseller Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar and Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates. The author or coauthor of thirty other books, including The Half-Jewish Book, the Elvis Presley mystery series (Kill Me Tender, Blue Suede Clues), and the award-winning novel The History of Now, Klein holds a degree in philosophy from Harvard University and lives in Western Massachusetts with his wife, Freke Vuijst.

Hilarious and Helpful

"Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates" is a surprisingly funny and nuanced view of the meaning of life, with special emphasis on the views of classical philosophers. The format will be familiar to those that have read Cathcart and Klein's "Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar" -- some serious philosophy, a good joke or two, and a series of delightful cartoons on relevant topics.

Surprisingly supported by the jokes and cartoons, the authors carefully consider some serious philosophical issues while clearly explaining background concepts. I was a Philosophy major in college many years ago, and it was delightful to see how easily the authors clearly explained some rather difficult concepts in Existentialism, classic philosophy (Plato and Aristotle), depth psychology (Freud and Jung), Buddhism, religion, and cybernetics as they explored issues like the survival of personality after death, the existence of heaven and hell, and the meaning of life.

There's a lot to learn from this book but it never feels dull or academic. Perhaps my only criticism is the repeated use of nicknames for famous philosophers. The first time Martin Heidegger is referred to as "Marty" is mildly amusing, but it quickly becomes tiresome as the gag is repeated many times. On the plus side, they quote Woody Allen often.

All in all, a refreshing and vigorous example of the best use of philosophy as a means to clarify thinking and beliefs. Highly recommended.

The Cartoons Are Killers!

I have several relatives in the "very old" generation and they're dropping like flies. As a result, I have tried to brush up on my ability to converse easily with those who have almost finished their bucket list. My particular approach is to minimize the religious and maximize the use of humor. Some of them have fallen hard enough for the threats about "the other place" and I feel it is my job to reassure them that they'll at least be well-remembered. So far, this book is my best resource.

You're in luck if you would like to be knowledgable about the great philosophers who addressed death but reading about them puts you to sleep. They're all here, interspersed with hilarious cartoons and correctly presented by the authors. The format of the book lends itself well to painless learning.

If you are approaching the finish line yourself, let me provide for you the recommendation of Mark Twain. I had read it before, but this book presents it again: "When approaching the Pearley Gates, leave your dog behind. If entrance were based on merit, he would be admitted and you would be left behind."

A joyous romp through the valley of the shadow of death and beyond

My guess is that over time this review will be buried six feet underneath a heaping pile of other positive reviews, but Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein deliver big on death and dying in their educational and uproarious book Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates.

Cathcart and Klein try to explain the philosophical and theological underpinnings of death and dying to the lay person. It is a book for those of us who have a deep desire to contemplate the meaning of our existence, but are not quite able to see the light through the opaque language of the philosophers. Cathcart and Klein are able to simplify these complex concepts and make them understandable to the average guy. By giving us concrete examples to illustrate the concepts and infusing all this with humor, the book never drags. It remains interesting, funny, incredibly readable, and edutaining.

And speaking of edutainment, the book is written like Sesame Street for adults. There is always a lot going on. Like Plato, who illustrated his philosophy by writing dialogs, Cathcart and Klein write their book as a dialoge. So instead of Socrates speaking with various Athenians, Cathcart and Klein write an irreverent dialogue between themselves and their `neighbor' Daryl. The authors illustrate the concepts as answers to fundamental questions posed by Daryl. Interspersed with this are jokes that illustrate the concepts discussed. If that weren't enough, the book also contains a huge number of cartoons (possibly from the New Yorker or at very least in that style) that further illustrate the concepts and numerous humorous quotations to round everything out. In the hands of some authors this kind of juggling might become confusing, but in the hands of Cathcart and Klein, the four kinds of narrative all come together and really enhance understanding. The humor really helps here. Not only does it keep the reader entertained but keeps an otherwise morbid subject matter from becoming tiresome. In an odd way, the humor keeps the book about death alive.

As for the caveats, this book covers a lot of introductory material, but it is still introductory. Dabblers such as me will find this entertaining and interesting, but anyone who really wants to plumb to the depths of philosophy will be disappointed. All the high concepts are there for the lay person, but this is not an advanced philosophy text. Moreover, the authors don't stick with any one concept long enough to explore it thoroughly. This did not bother me, as the book is really supposed to be an introduction to these concepts, but might frustrate someone who wants a little more than the book was designed to deliver.

As to the humor, you may recognize some very, very old jokes. But Cathcart and Klein really do use the jokes to illustrate concepts and they have a knack for retelling the jokes rather well. Some of the jokes bombed with me, but they come in rapid succession. So even though it can be hit or miss, there are enough hits to keep the laughter going. Just to forewarn, some of the jokes are politically incorrect, but the authors seem to pick on women and men equally so my guess is that no one will get too offended.

All an all, a joyous romp through the valley of the shadow of death and the afterlife. It's hard to imagine a book like that, but here it is.

About the Author

The late Joseph Rothschild served as Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science and Associate of the Institute on East Central Europe at Columbia University. His books include Ethnopolitics: A Conceptual Framework (1981), East Central Europe Between the Two World Wars (1974), Pilsudski's Coup d'État (1966), and The Communist Party of Bulgaria (1959.

Nancy M. Wingfield is Professor of History at Northern Illinois University. She is author of Flag Wars and Stone Saints: How the Bohemian Lands Became Czech (forthcoming in 2007); editor of Creating the Other: Ethnic Conflict and Nationalism in Habsburg Central Europe (2003); and coeditor, with Maria Bucur, of Gender and War in Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe (2006) and Staging the Past: The Politics of Commemoration in Habsburg Central Europe, 1848 to the Present (2001).

This is still an excellent overview; highly recommended

Rothschild passed away a few years ago, but the updated version does a good job of treating post-1989 issues. I always found his earlier version to be highly useful in the classroom, in my "Eastern Europe Since 1945" classes. His writing is very accessible, and his judgment is impeccable. And the book is well-balanced between the different countries it encompasses.

Complicated history

The history of Eastern Europe before and after WWII is very complicated. However, this is a good attempt at making it understandable to a non historian. What comes through is the terrible oppression of these countries from war, Nazis, and finally the communists through most of the 20th Century.

No Solution Files Duh !!!!!!!!!!!!

I ordered this book to learn QB 2013 Accountant on my own. I am overseas and it cost me almost $160 including shipping. I just received it today. I looked through the book. There are NO answers to any questions or problem sets !!!! The back cover gives a URL, clearly stated, "Student Data Files that accompany this book" go here and get them.

Well the solutions are in the Instructor area so you as person who purchased this book to learn QB 2013 or a self-learner aren't getting them. Pay special attention to the URL on page 38 to get the Student Data Files. Also the CD with the book is a 140 day trial version of QB 2013. Big deal. You can download that from Intuit anyway for free.

To say I am upset would be the understatement of recorded human history.

I blame:

1. Amazon and the author for not clearly stating in the book description that this a TEXTBOOK for college class and NOT a book for independent/self-directed study. It is not a book you get of the book store self to learn with.

2. Pearson Publishing for printing a book with no solutions in it. And for not realizing that many of us are in fact self learners. I guess learning outside of a formal school environment is a foreign concept to Pearson Publishing.

So unless you are enrolled in a college course where you have an instructor with the solution files available DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Search the Pearson website using the ISBN and you will see what I mean.

Buy a book designed for independent study. Don't make the same expensive mistake I did.

Update:

Having started using this book I have noticed the following deficiencies:

1. The paper has a high gloss sheen to it making difficult to read using a desk lamp or overhead lighting. The "shine" reflected from the paper causes you to have to physically move the page or your head to read the text.

2. The paper is extremely thin and fragile. Highlighting soaks through the paper at worse and at a minimum and can be seen even after turning the page to read fresh text. You can see the highlighting from the previous page. Also the pages must be turned with extreme care as they will tear easily from the spiral binding (no I haven't done it but the potential is there).

3. All screen captures are in Black and White. This is very poor and unacceptable for a book costing me almost $160. Printing them in color is what should have been done.

4. The author in Chapter 2, where you start doing things for real, has you enter dates in the format 01/05/13. This VERY BAD making it a real possibility that you will enter a payment before the invoice, etc. The date format ACTUALLY used by QB2013 comes from your computer. So unless your date format is set to Month-Day-Year you will be entering the wrong dates if your computers date format is set to Day-Month-Year like a huge part of the rest of the world is. This is never mentioned in Dates on Page 70. What should have been stated for students to do is to use the mini-calendar icon in the date box as you enter the date for each task. Just Click on the date icon causing a mini calendar to open and then click the date you want and be done with it. This way no matter what your computer system date format is set to you will have the correct dates. I guess the author and the publisher never envisioned this book being sold outside the U.S.

The aforementioned deficiencies only convince me that the book was published as cheaply as possible to sell at the highest cost possible. Additionally, the text in the first 134 pages repeatedly makes reference to the classroom environment justifying my initial review that this is a text book for class and not for independent study and the failure to clearly identify it as such to prospective buyers.

Update:

I have finished Chapter 2. While it was fine as far as the instruction I will never know if I have the correct answers for the end-of-chapter problem. I am reasonably sure my answers are correct. I did not waste ink and paper printing out everything. I am not turning them into an instructor nevertheless I still did the reports and everything looks okay. I will only be doing the first four chapters and the Practice Set for Section One since I am in a service oriented business and we don't do inventory (perhaps later when I have time). I will also do Chapter 8 (Payroll) and Chapter 9 (Setting Up a Company). In Ch 8 the author DOES TELL YOU how to MANUALLY turn on Payroll so you are not forced to use the fee based payroll services from Intuit. A shame QB/Intuit just simply does not provide this option right up front but makes you go through the Help Menu to do it. Also there are many more dialog boxes to go through than the book presents. No big deal. Just do what they say to start manual payroll. I chose manual payroll because I don't need to pay the fees and I am in a foreign country and their payroll taxes are completely different so I have to enter the data anyway.

Not quite what I expected

When I purchased it, the seller did not disclose that it's an instructor REVIEW copy. Until I actually start the class, I have no idea if the problems that are going to be used in the class are the same as the ones in this book. For all I know, they changed things before the actual publication run. That said, they may not have changed them. It just would have been nice to know that it was a REVIEW copy -- then I could have opted to take the risk.
