especially for an alphabet like Arabic where clarity is crucial
By Amazon Customer
The blue book shown is the original, not the "compact" printing I received. I know this book well from years of use. I have several smaller-print versions which I NEVER use - it's too tiring. While the "compact" version is quite attractive and is probably a boon to students, it has two major flaws: the paper is very glossy and reflective, and the print is too small, especially for an alphabet like Arabic where clarity is crucial. Incidentally, it might be useful to produce an "enlarged" version. It is one of the great dictionaries, and people like me will use it until they can no longer see!

THE Arabic dictionary, but watch the print date
By tbg
This is THE Arabic to English dictionary. If you are studying Arabic, this is a great dictionary to have. If, however, you want an English to Arabic dictionary then look at Al-Mawrid. Wehr does not even have an index that allows you to go from English to Arabic.

The Wehr dictionary is available in 2 editions in English: one stems from the 1961 edition and is available in reprints from many different years. The 4th edition became available in 1993 and has about 200 more pages of entries. Both are excellent, but if you want the newer edition, then select carefully. Unfortunately the Amazon descriptions appear to be unreliable: this particular entry says it is the 1980 printing of the 4th edition. However, the 1980 printing is of the first edition, not the 4th edition. I suggest you verify the number of pages to confirm what edition you are ordering: the 1st edition has 1110 pages, the 4th edition has over 1300 pages.

An Arabic student's most important asset
By greyduk
It is pretty unfortunate that this costs so much more than the soft cover. I got it for free, though, so my review is based on the book itself.

After about 5 months of tedium in my Arabic class, I decided to rip the cover off and cover the stiff inner leafs with duct tape. I would still replace it with a hardcover however, because the binding is so much sturdier. Since then, I have found it the most essential part of my study. It has a wonderful and thorough explanation of some of the peculiarities of Arabic grammar. The only thing I would wish to add would be an easier to reference chart of verb measures. It is referenced in the introduction, but only in passing, and without examples of passive/active, perfect/imperfect. This isn't a major criticism, just the only way I can think to improve it.

The Girls He Adored, by Jonathan Nasaw

For ten years, the charmingly disheveled veteran FBI Special Agent E.L. Pender has been investigating the apparently random disappearances of a dozen women across the country. The only detail the cases have in common is the strawberry blond color of the victims' hair, and the presence of a mystery man with whom they were last seen.
Then, in Monterey, California, a routine traffic stop erupts into a scene of horrific violence. The local police are stunned by a disemboweled strawberry blond victim and an ingenious killer with multiple alternating personalities. Pender is convinced he has found his man, but before he can prove it, the suspect stages a cunning jailbreak and abducts his court-appointed psychiatrist, Irene Cogan.
In a house on a secluded ridge in Oregon, Irene must navigate through the minefield of her captor's various egos -- male and female, brilliant and nave, murderous and passive -- all of whom are dominated by Max, a seductive killer who views her as both his prisoner and his salvation. Irene knows that to survive she must play along with Max's game of sexual perversion. Only then will she be able to strip back the layers to discover a chilling story of a shattered young boy -- and all the girls he adored.
A sexually charged thriller of extraordinary originality and page-turning suspense, The Girls He Adored moves furiously from the inner recesses of the psyche to its final, startling climax. Jonathan Nasaw brilliantly portrays two equally intense characters -- a deviant killer and the expert who can unlock his darkest secrets -- and introduces one of the most likable sleuths in recent fiction.

Chapter One

"I'll save you some time," said the prisoner, shuffling into the interview room in his orange jumpsuit, fettered and manacled, wrists cuffed to a padlocked belt around his waist, and a scowling sheriff's deputy at his elbow. "I'm oriented times three, my thought processes are clear, and my mood and affect are appropriate to my circumstances."

"I see you're familiar with the drill." The psychiatrist, a slender blond woman in her early forties, looked up from behind a metal desk bare except for a Dictaphone, a notepad, and a manila folder. "Have a seat."

"Any chance of getting these things off?" The prisoner rattled his fetters dramatically. Slight, an inch or so below medium height, he appeared to be in his late twenties.

The psychiatrist glanced up at the deputy, who shook his head. "Not if you want me to leave you alone with him."

"I do, for now," said the psychiatrist. "He may need a hand free later for some of the standardized tests."

"I'll have to be here for that. Just pick up the phone when you're ready." A black telephone was mounted on the wall behind the psychiatrist. Beside it was an inconspicuous alarm button; an identical button was concealed on the psychiatrist's side of the desk. "And you, siddown."

The prisoner shrugged and lowered himself into the unpadded wooden chair, tugging with manacled hands at the crotch of his jumpsuit, as if it had ridden up on him. His heart-shaped face was just this side of pretty, with long-lashed eyes and lips like a Botticelli angel. He seemed to be bothered by a lock of nut brown hair that had fallen boyishly across his forehead and over one eye, so as the guard left the room, the psychiatrist reached across the desk and brushed it back for him with her fingers.

"Thank you," said the prisoner, looking up at her through lowered eyelids. The glitter of mischievous, self-satisfied amusement had faded from his gold-flecked brown eyes -- but only for a moment. "I appreciate the gesture. Are you a defense whore or a prosecution whore?"

"Neither." The psychiatrist ignored the insult. Testing behavior, she told herself. He was trying to control their interaction by provoking an aggressive response.

"Come on, which is it? Either my lawyer hired you to say I'm insane, or the DA hired you to say I'm not. Or were you appointed by the court to see if I'm fit to stand trial? If so, let me assure you that I am perfectly capable of understanding the charges against me and assisting in my own defense. Those are the criteria, are they not?"

"More or less."

"You still haven't answered my question. I'll rephrase it if you'd like. Have you been hired by the defense, the prosecution, or the court?"

"Would it make a difference in how you respond to my questions?"

The prisoner's demeanor changed dramatically. He lowered his shoulders, arched his neck, cocked his head to the side, and formed his next words carefully, almost primly, at the front of his mouth, speaking with just a trace of a lisp. "Would it make a dif-fer-ence in how you respond to my questy-ons?"

It was a remarkably effective imitation of her own bearing and manner of speaking, the psychiatrist realized. He had her nailed, right down to the hint of sibilence that was, after years of speech therapy, all that remained of a once ferocious, sputtering, Daffy Duck of a speech impediment. But the parody was more affectionate than cruel, as if he'd known and liked her for years.

"Of course it would," he went on in his own voice. "Don't be disingenuous."

"I suppose you're right." The psychiatrist sat back in her chair, trying to maintain a professional demeanor despite the hot blush blooming in her cheeks. "That was an excellent imitation, by the way."

"Thank you!" Jail garb, fetters, and circumstances notwithstanding, the prisoner's grin lit up the bare room. "Want to see my Jack Nicholson?"

"Perhaps some other time," she replied, sounding to her annoyance every bit as prim as his imitation of her. She caught herself touching the top few buttons of her beige blouse with fluttering fingertips, like a schoolgirl who'd noticed her date glancing surreptitiously at her chest. "We have quite a bit of work ahead of us today."

"Oh! Well then, by all means, let's get on with it." The prisoner flapped his manacled wrists, as if he were shooing pigeons away; his chains rattled musically.

"Thank you." She leaned forward and pressed the power button on the voice-activated Dictaphone. "I'm Dr. Cogan, by the way."

The psychiatrist had been hoping he would respond in kind -- thus far the prisoner had refused to give his name to the authorities. But all she got from him was a cheerful "Pleased to meetcha," and a cavalier, if truncated, wave of his cuffed right hand.

She tried again, more directly. "And your name is...?"

"Call me Max."

"I notice you haven't quite answered my question."

"I notice you haven't quite answered mine. Who hired you?"

She'd been hoping he'd let it drop; now she had to answer, or risk losing his cooperation. "The court, indirectly: I was hired by a firm that contracts its services to the county."

He nodded, as if she'd confirmed something he already knew. She waited a moment, then prompted him. "And your name?"

"Like I said, call me Max." He looked up. Really, that's the best I can do, said his embarrassed grin; I win, said his eyes.

The psychiatrist moved on. "Nice to meet you, Max. As you're probably aware, we have some standard tests we need to get through -- "

"MMPI, Rorschach, thematic apperception, maybe a sentence completion if you're really trying to pad your hours -- "

" -- but first let's just chat for a few minutes."

"By chat, if you mean conduct a clinical interview, beginning with a question to be asked in an open-ended manner and designed to elicit the patient's own perception of the problem" -- he had to stop for a breath -- "or difficulty that has led him or her to seek treatment, let me save you some time: My diagnosis is dissociative amnesia, possibly a dissociative fugue state."

Then you're not really oriented times three, are you? thought Dr. Cogan, breaking off eye contact to look through the manila folder. "I'm curious, Max. You seem to be quite familiar with psychiatric terms and procedures. Might you have worked in the mental health field?"

"Might have." Then, thoughtfully: "Of course, I also might have been a patient in a locked facility. I mean, considering the circumstances under which I was found."

"That sounds like a good place to start. Tell me about the circumstances under which you were found."

"Well, Dr. Cogan, it's like this." The prisoner leaned forward in his chair. His breathing had grown shallower, and the glitter in his eyes was darker and more pronounced. The psychiatrist had the impression that for the first time since he'd entered the room, his interest was fully engaged. "The first thing I remember is finding myself sitting in a car next to the body of a young woman who had recently been disemboweled."

Disemboweled. It struck Irene Cogan as odd how one simple word could be so much more evocative than a three-page coroner's report describing in clinical detail "a semicircular ventral incision beginning one and a half centimeters above the right iliac crest, extending downward to three centimeters above the pubic symphysis, then describing an upward arc to the top of the left iliac crest, with resulting extrusion of both large and small bowel...."

She looked up from the manila folder. The prisoner was waiting for her next question with an eager grin, his gold-flecked eyes shining, looking for all the world like a man enjoying a terrific first date. Momentarily jarred out of her professional detachment, Dr. Cogan switched onto automatic pilot, lobbing one of the interviewee's last words back at him in lieu of a real question. "Recently? How recently?"

The prisoner shrugged easily -- or as easily as the fetters would allow. "I dunno, thirty, forty seconds. She was still sitting up."

Chilling Murder Mystery, Great Characters
By Chris Stoner
This is a great serial killer yarn with lots of twists and turns, and it uses the sometimes over-sensationalized disorder of MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder) to create an unpredictable killer who can be quiet and unassuming, violent and terrifying, and a range in between, based on which "alter" is in control. The detective (the lynchpin of series like these) is E. L. Pender, a rather rumpled kind of guy who is endearing and intelligent, is engaging enough to sustain a detective series, and Dr. Cogan, an expert on MPD who gets caught up in the killer's swath of terror, is another great character who returns in a later book in the series.

The action is well-written, there is a nice balance between subtle suggestion and outright gore, and the characters are all interesting and enjoyable (likeable doesn't seem the right word for a book like this!). If you like Alex Cross series you would probably enjoy these books as well, and this book is where the series started. I highly recommend all of them, but especially this one and WHEN SHE WAS BAD which feature the same serial killer character as well as Dr. Cogan.

A bit slow but I liked the characters
By Kim
The first book in the E.L Pender series. Edger Lee Pender is an FBI agent almost at forced retirement age. He's spent the last 10 years hunting a serial killer he's named Casey that only he thinks exists and it's gotten him into trouble along the way. We come into the action after a man who refuses to give his name is arrested after being pulled over and killing his passenger as well as attacking the officer that pulled him over. The story follows the next week in the lives of "Max" the serial killer with multiple personality disorder, Irene his court ordered psychiatrist and Pender. I like the writing style and the characters but the book dragged a lot. I do not want to tell you too much about it and ruin the story but I will try Nasaw again and see whats next for Pender.

A Complexity Perspective on Researching Organisations: Taking Experience Seriously (Complexity as the Experience of Organizing)From Rout

Part of the Complexity as the Experience of Organizing series, this book applies complex responsiveness theory to real-life leadership experiences. It features contributions from and details the experience of organizational practitioners, leaders, consultants and managers from various organizations through narrative accounts. It addresses questions such as:

  • How do widespread or global patterns emerge and evolve in the local interactions between people?
  • What actually happens in global change programmes?
  • What does this imply about the relationship between the local and the global?

Exploring the perspective of complex responsive processes, the book’s contributors examine how this assists them in making sense of their experience, and how this awareness then leads to their development.

This book is a valuable study for academics, business school students and practitioners, as rather than offering mere descriptions of organizational life, it provides reflective accounts of real-life experiences of researching in organizations.

conceptual guide to artistic composition--seminal work
By C. J. Clavadetscher
Arnheim's book on the creative eye has survived well over half a century, for a reason. This is a truly seminal work on "seeing" and composing artistic images. He deals primarily with painting. I am a photographer. This book means as much to the current photographer with digital camera as to the artist with easel canvas and brush. Fascinating reading illustrated with classic examples. Re-shapes the mind. I bought copies for all of my friends who are, like me, serious shooters.

Difficult, but essential
By Mike Grant
As an artist, I find this book a must read. It's difficult, but essential.

It was pivotal in opening my mind to a multifaceted way of looking at visual organization, composition, and development. I also gained a strong vocabulary for talking and thinking about paintings from any chosen era- an invaluable skill for anyone who falls in love with a particular painting but doesn't know why or how to explain it to others. In the way that The Painter's Secret Geometry: A Study of Composition in Art developed my appreciate for the classics, this book helped me understand Modern art.

Bad Textbook
By Michael Fox
This textbook was very appropriate for the animation course I bought it for. The lessons and information in the book included many good insights and points about art. However, the way in which the book was written destroyed one's ability to process the information. The text was heavy with metaphor and redundancy. Because the chapters are long and don't have summaries, the reader feels left alone in a sea of words, not knowing what is important or where the book is going with its points.

How would it be to live in a city where no one was allowed to use his imagination freely? Where dreams and fantasy had to be used for socioeconomic purposes? Laplatia is a dystopian city in the near future where natural resources for the production of electrical power on Earth have been depleted. With increasing chaos due to this shortage, civilization invented the Extractors, machines capable of extracting human imagination and turning it into Fos, electricity's raw material. Consequently, citizens were prohibited to "spend useless thoughts," such as those provided by imagination, dreams, and fantasy, unless they were destined to the Extractors. In this city, we follow the story of seven characters, their anguishes, their relationships, and their solitude. Laplatia is an erratic story that emotionally moves the reader and urges him to reflect about himself and the society. After all, who said one's thought is free?

A fascinating and thought-provoking look at human society that just happened to be set in a dystopian future.
By Andrew Christie
I opened this book expecting a dystopian fantasy that, hopefully, was an interesting take on what has become quite a stale topic.
What I found was a fascinating and thought-provoking look at human society that just happened to be set in a dystopian future.

Without giving anything away, the premise behind “Laplatia” is that in the near future, Earth no longer has the raw materials to produce electricity. However, a process has been developed whereby human thoughts can be removed by Extractors and then turned into Fos, a raw material that can be used to generate electricity. This makes human imagination a commodity that cannot be wasted with the result that using the imagination, having a dream or just thinking creatively can ONLY happen if linked up to an Extractor.

Pretty big concept, isn’t it? Pretty far-fetched too, huh?

Maybe if one was reading a typical dystopian fantasy where the focus is on how people get along in a new world order. And while “Laplatia” does have elements of this, the primary focus is on how having imagination forbidden affects the INDIVIDUAL. And this is what makes “Laplatia” such a wonderful read.

You don’t need to be a psychologist to appreciate how Loche takes the reader into the mind of people wrenched from imaginative thought. The reader experiences depression, compulsions, paranoia, not to mention extreme paranoia and anxiety. The reader witnesses social disorder as envisioned by a philosophical mind expressed by communication skills that are both clear and passionate.

This is not dystopian so much as thriller and not so much fantasy as psychological insight. Read it if you want to expand your mind while having a jolly good read.

LaPlatia by João Michels
By Lucas Dallas
After reading Black Bile from the same author i had great expectations over this new work. They were highly overcome. Laplatia was definitely one of the best 2016 readings so far. A impactful book that took my breath away and I'm sure it will take yours.

Let's start talking about the plot. I'll try not to give spoilers, I promisse.
Laptlatia is a dystopia. But a different one. It reminds us the old school dystopias like Fahrenheit 451 or Brave new World, making us really reflective, and sometimes, uncomfortable. It really change us.

Laplatia is a city in a not so far future, where all the dreams, imaginations, fantasies and thoughts are not allowed, at least freely. If you're gonna use it, you'll have to do it using an extractor that will change it into Fos, the new source of energy used in the world. You can think that it is not a big deal, after all, you can help mankind and be ok with it. No. It's not. Collateral damages - and none of them soft - are involved. Things like paranoia, deep depression and lots and lots of mental problems. That's what happen when you're not allowed to use your imagination freely. And we follow the life of those people, living in this despicable new way of living.

Loch creates a cast of characters so real that you feel they could be your father, your mother, your siblings or your neighbor. Each one of then affected differently by the extraction or the life in this new world. It is impossible not to empathize yourself with one or all of them, or identify with them. My favorites are Aaron, Hermes, Daphne and Ophelia. I felt for them. They really moved me.

This story makes you think. Makes you valorize the life and your mind. Makes you see things for a new perspective. It's a book filled with philosophy, but not the boring kind. It's a must read to all who the people out there who enjoys a creative story, full of emotions, thrill and sentiment.

Loch's narrative is alive. You can see the characters, you can feel them. It's at the same time, poetic and chilling. I must warn you that, there are chapters that you may want to read with the lights on, specially the one where is told us how the world got to the point they are. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK RIGHT AWAY, just saying.

Here, I left you some of my favorite quotes.

"They both said nothing. There was nothing to talk about. "

" Fos had to be made and the machines had to keep running. Cases like Ophelia’s were mere flukes. Zargos was powerless to change any of it. He’d not only have to endure what advancing civilization had done to Ophelia, but also accept it. "

"Nevertheless, all these imaginative thoughts would have to be processed by the state-owned Extractors. It was the law—one that had allowed mankind to prevail. That happened many decades ago. Thenceforth the right of someone to freely use his or her own imagination was banished. "

" Therefore, even just a few minutes of power outage turned the city into chaotic, frenetic tingling.

"And what did the culture of Fos production do? It created, with its numerous media resources, more and more lacking; more and more desire for the generation of imagination. "

Interesting read for those who prefer character development over plot.
By Party of 8
I received a PDF version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was impressed with the author's well-developed writing, however, this book needs more proofreading and editing as there are grammar issues found throughout the book. Here are just four examples:

-Page 44: "He looked at the boy . . . and thought about he'd slapped him."
-Page 62: "But they soon they realized . . ."
-Page 84: "They approached slowly, never breaking eye contact until they their faces stood . . ."
-Page 94: "At this time, Aaron had arrived destination."

With the exception of a few instances (like this sentence from page 45: "He took his car and rapidly drove it there."), I liked the author's prose.

When I started this book I was expecting something different based on the description (but it may have just been my misunderstanding). I was expecting a book that would be more about the dystopian society that the story takes place in, but as the book went on it became increasingly clear that the plot of the dystopian society was a backdrop for delving into the lives of the characters (much like how the movie Titanic was a backdrop for Jack and Roses' love story).

For me, I prefer a more plot-driven tale than a character-driven tale. If you are big on characters this book may be right up your alley (but not for those who prefer stories carried predominantly by plot). In Laplatia, aside from a brief power outage earlier in the book, nothing related to action happened in the story till chapter 19 when a prison fire breaks out.

I believe this author has great potential.

SEX
There's a description of an adulterous affair but the affair is not described in sexual detail.

LANGUAGE
Very little if any. In fact, I can't recall any profanity in the book which is surprisingly refreshing nowadays. (Thank you, Alexandre A. Loch.)

WORLDVIEW
The theory of evolution is spoken of as fact.

VIOLENCE
Minimal. The book contains a description of two stabbings.

I didn't hate it...
By Amazon Customer
But the heroine was annoying. So annoying in fact that Mercer's threats to kill her didn't bother me.

I liked Adam. And am finally glad Ben is nearly 18. I've waited for his story since book 1. I suspect Darrell will turn out to be the man from Mother Bear's past.

Great reading
By Amazon Customer
I really enjoyed reading Lauren and Adam's story. It was a little sadder than the others in the series, but for this story I do not think it would have worked any other way. I also liked how Great Mother Bear is trying to atone. I hope there will be more in this series.
