both sides of bullying and a third grade Tiger Teacher
By Sakuteiki
[ASIN:0300040482 A Class Divided, Then and Now, Expanded Edition] book. The day after Martin Luther King Jr was shot, third grade teacher Janet Elliott decided she needed to answer questions from students about "why they killed the King?" since only a month before they had celebrated his contributions to our understanding of non-violent moral behavior. This documentary follows the third grade class of 1970 in white rural Iowa farming country as they engage in behaving as bullies and experience being bullied on alternate days. Janet Elliott explains to the children they are going to practice an exercise in discrimination and prejudice, and elicits their consent. Elliott asks for their contributions of stories of their understanding of people who are unfairly discriminated against. Most describe skin color as the basis of bias. Elliott explains the exercise: those who wear collars are discriminated against, those who do not wear collars are smarter, quicker, more capable, have longer recess, are superior in all respects. The first day begins with blue eyes as superior, brown eyes as discriminated against. The 1970 documentary The Eye of the Storm follows the children's responses the first day. By the end of the day the brown eyes are looking at the ground, demoralized, incapable of answering questions in their classroom, their performance is severely impaired. The children initiate using the term "brown eyes" as a pejorative. Former best friends experience scission in trust, bonding, affiliation.

The second day Elliott says she lied yesterday, as all blue eyes do. In fact it is the brown eyes who are superior. Each brown eyed third grader is to take off the collar and place it on a blue eyed child. The behavior among children reverses. In interview Elliott describes applying standardized testing on the children a month before the experiment, on each day of the exercise as bully and as bullied, then at the end of the school year. The results are sent to Stanford where assessments indicate that the children markedly decline in mental competence within 24 hours of being bullied, and perform at superior levels when they are not wearing the collar. Most shocking of all the entire class performs successfully at superior levels to their baseline assessment through to the end of the class year. National Geographic: Stress - Portrait of a Killer In other words, experiencing compassion for one day improves the social intellectual cognitive competence of the children for an entire school year.

The entire class of third graders end up with enhanced self confidence and intellectual performance through to the end of the year compared with their test performance the month before the experiment.

The 1970 film is replayed during the 1984 reunion of the now adult former third graders. A Class Divided pans from the 1970 film to the faces of the current adults. Elliott has them share their memories of their feelings during the experiment, and how that has impacted their decision making as adults: choice of marital partner Married People : Staying Together in the Age of Divorce by Klagsbrun, Francine, assessing friendship and trustworthiness in others, awareness of prejudice in their own families, their courage in parenting differently Helicopters, Drill Sergeants, and Consultants Book & CD Set: Parenting Styles & the Messages They Send and confronting discrimination in their adult lives. Elliott asks if children and TEACHERS would benefit from experiencing this exercise.

Film of the children's experiences are played among prison inmates. Staff is directed to attend a seminar without being told what the topic is. Elliott performs the exercise among prison staff. Their reactions and debriefing comments are stunning in candor and revelation.

The 1984 reunion picnic of the 1970 third graders affirms that the now adults feel a bond, akin to those who have been through war together, which is long lasting. They endorse feeling like family and are committed to never treating each other harmfully ever again. [ASIN:0316090077 Aging Well: Surprising Guideposts to a Happier Life from the Landmark Harvard Study of Adult Development] ongoing study of 17 year olds from 1942, The Complete Up Series Michael Apted interviewed 14 seven year olds born in 1956 and once every 7 years thereafter as 14 Up, 21 Up, etc. The last film is 56 Up longitudinal observation of individuals' entire lives condensed into a documentary, fascinating.

The influence of one Tiger Teacher on the lives of third graders with a single two day exercise experiencing discrimination. Walking in the shoes of another, developing empathy, compassion, lovingkindness. Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In
