Charlotte Street: A Novel, by Danny Wallace

“Unmissable...will have you laughing out loud and melt your heart, all at once.”
—Cosmopolitan (UK)

Danny Wallace is a British writer, producer, and award-winning journalist whom GQ (UK) calls, “One of Britain’s great writing talents.” The man who gave us Yes Man (basis for the Hollywood motion picture starring Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel) makes a grand foray into fiction with Charlotte Street, a sweet and sharp romantic comedy about finding love, growing up, and making your own fate that fans of the novels of Nick Hornby and David Nicholls are going to adore. With this charming, slightly twisted comic novel about an endearing loser’s convoluted plot to turn a brief chance meeting into a once-in-a-lifetime love affair, Wallace proves he has ample heart to go along with the humor.

From Booklist
Londoner Jason Priestley may share a name with the cute, former cast member of Beverly Hills 90210, but the excitement in this thirtysomething’s life starts and ends there. The lackluster lad spends his days writing snarky reviews for a local rag sheet and pining over the girl who left him. (She’s marrying someone else; wouldn’t you just know?) Then a chance encounter with a lovely lass on a busy downtown street turns Jason’s life upside down. Her smile leaves a lasting impression. But there’s more: she dropped a disposable camera, whose undeveloped pictures would undoubtedly provide clues to her whereabouts. Is it ethical to have them processed? Jason pushes the limits of propriety in pursuit of romance, along the way receiving dating tips from his roommate Dev, a quirky video-game-shop owner also obsessed with a woman well beyond his reach. Will Jason find love or have his heart broken yet again? Award-winning British writer Wallace (Friends like These, 2009) serves up a mildly amusing tale of an innocuous stalker who meets a beautiful girl. --Allison Block

Review
“Delightful . . . witty . . . The combination of Dickensian plot twists and Hornbyesque humor and hope makes for a thoroughly entertaining read.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Though lighthearted in tone, [CHARLOTTE STREET] speaks to a nostalgia for a time when photographs were authentic and unsullied by smartphone filters . . . Readers who enjoy the work of Nick Hornby or Stephen Chbosky will enjoy this.” (Library Journal)

“An amusing tale of an innocuous stalker.” (Booklist)

“Unmissable... will have you laughing out loud and melt your heart, all at once.” (Cosmopolitan (UK))

“One of Britain’s great writing talents.” (GQ (UK))

“[Danny Wallace is] as funny as Bill Bryson used to be.” (The Independent on Sunday, on YES MAN)

“Danny Wallace may well have stumbled upon the future shape of spirituality… hilarious.” (Daily Telegraph (London), on JOIN ME!)

“Another comedy masterpiece.” (Bookseller (London), on FRIENDS LIKE THESE)

From the Back Cover

Jason Priestley (no, not that Jason Priestley) is in a rut. He gave up his teaching job to write snarky reviews of cheap restaurants for the free newspaper you take but don't read. He lives above a video-game store, between a Polish newsstand and that place that everyone thinks is a brothel but isn't. His most recent Facebook status is "Jason Priestley is . . . eating soup." Jason's beginning to think he needs a change.

So he uncharacteristically moves to help a girl on the street who's struggling with an armload of packages, and she smiles an incredible smile at him before her cab pulls away. What for a fleeting moment felt like a beginning is cruelly cut short—until Jason realizes that he's been left holding a disposable camera. And suddenly, with prodding and an almost certainly disastrous offer of assistance from his socially inept best friend Dev, a coincidence-based, half-joking idea—What if he could track this girl down based on the photos in her camera?—morphs into a full-fledged quest to find the woman of Jason's dreams.

Disappointed With Charlotte Street When You Consider How Brilliant His Non Fiction Tales Are
By James N Simpson
Danny Wallace's first fiction novel is a bit of a disappointment for me. He'd by far be my favourite non fiction tale writer, Danny either on his own or co-writing with fellow similar British author Dave Gorman, could tell you a tale of visiting some guy they'd never met before's house to watch paint dry and it you wouldn't want to stop reading until you'd finished. Danny is that good a non fiction writer! However the opposite it true with his first dive into the world of fiction, with Charlotte Street, you've got to force yourself to keep reading and fight the urge to skip to the ending. His main character Jason, (the narrator) should be the type of underdog type character you instantly like and root for. For some reason though he's hard to like. Plus I never got the point why Danny decided to call him the same name as the 90210 actor who played the oldest high school student on TV. Sure there's the odd moment where a receptionist is disappointed he's not the ex actor turning up to review their establishment or some new person he meets makes a lame joke about it, but none of this is monumental enough or even frankly interesting enough to add anything to the tale. The supporting characters aren't that interesting either especially Dev his best mate. Abbey and Matt bring something to the story when they are introduced but by then I think a lot of people would have stopped reading. Matt especially wasn't used enough, the whole former bad behaviour student, teacher not wanting to make eye contact with them now as an adult in hopes of avoiding interaction could have brought a great deal of humour to the book but we only really mildly go there. As we do the whole central driving part of the plot, the mysterious girl who dropped her belongings while getting into a cab, leaving behind the disposable camera and an obsession by Jason to track her down as she could be "the girl" fate meant for him. I found the developments pretty much being wrapped up in a year later page at the end pretty unsatisfying.

I would read a second fiction book by Danny Wallace simply due to how brilliant he is at writing non fiction. However if this is going to be your first reading experience of his work, I'd recommend looking up Join Me where he started a cult by accident, or Are You Dave Gorman? and start with one of those instead.

Charlotte Street
By Christine
This is going to be a tough review to write... not because I loved this book or because I hated it, in fact I am decidedly somewhere in the middle. If they allowed 1/2 stars then I would give this book a solid 3.5, as there are only full stars I have decided to bump it up to 4.

This is a book about real life. The good, the bad and the ugly. There is more good than bad and ugly but I did find myself struggling at certain points. I even found myself skipping small sections (gasp) when I saw it was entering into another very drawn out life experience montage. I also found that when something happened in Jason's life the story would all of a sudden switch to some other time and place and I had to reread to make sure my Kindle hadn't skipped a page or section.

I was a bit disappointed in the ending, would have loved to had more of The Girl, I mean after all this is what it was all building toward right? Although this is more of a story about friends and life in general, you know the stuff that gets in the way of your dreams...

In the end I am glad I read it and I would suggest to others, however I would suggest the sample first. If you find yourself not loving it or the style of writing then I would skip it. It won't be for you.

4.5 Stars! An Awesome Read!
By Amazon Customer
I just wanted to start by saying this is my first book by Danny Wallace and won't be my last!
I Received Charlotte Street as a First-read giveaway, and found the synopsis interesting; the plot refreshing. After reading uncountable Sci-fi and Fantasy books for the past couple of months, Charlotte Street was a good change.

The story takes off in London with the introduction of Jason (Jase) Priestley-a 32-years-old former teacher and reviewer living on Caledonian Road, who happened to come across a girl in need of help. Mesmerized but lost his chance of what he believes could have been a start of something new, he and his best friend Dev trek their way throughout London meeting remarkable old and new friends along the way; in search of The girl. As their mission sets off readers are given the whole journey in Jase's point-of-view.
To be honest I did not know what to expect of this novel; the storyline of `boy stalk girl' was quite new to me and it is probably also the reason why I was drawn to this novel. Usually when reading a book, there are many times when you are able to create your own version of what is going to happen further into the plot, however, that is not the case for this captivating and inspiring novel. It is probably one if it's charm.
A revitalizing plot was only one of the many reasons I wished I won this book when I first saw it listed on the giveaway section here on Goodreads. The characters here are REAL! From their emotions, their feelings, thoughts, to the situations that they position themselves in, are all in which everyday people think about, witness, and go through ...uh ... minus the stalking part. Not happening only once, but many times throughout this novel, it was as if Danny Wallace created a mind reading machine that is capable of invading my most inner thought and memories, and used the information sought to make up his characters. There was just so much that Jase and I had in common, that during the moments I was reading Charlotte Street, I became Jase ... I was Jase (gender wise not included but personality, thought, and action wise). That was scary (in an intriguing way of course).
As it was my first Danny Wallace novel, it is amazing to see how he was able to use the words: humor, heartwarming, and stalking in the same sentence without the book coming out disarray. I could have finished the book a lot sooner, yet, I am glad that I did not rush my way into it.
I gave the ratings 4.5 out of 5 stars, only because in the beginning there were a few times where it seems as if the story was going nowhere, then again that too was in a way just a part of Jason Priestley's life. At least, before his unexpected encounter. A wonderful read!
