Conducting close readings of stories from Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese, and Tibetan literature written between the third century BCE and the late medieval period, Reiko Ohnuma argues that this theme has had a major impact on the development of Buddhist philosophy and culture.

Whether he takes the form of king, prince, ascetic, elephant, hare, serpent, or god, the bodhisattva repeatedly gives his body or parts of his flesh to others. He leaps into fires, drowns himself in the ocean, rips out his tusks, gouges out his eyes, and lets mosquitoes drink from his blood, always out of selflessness and compassion and to achieve the highest state of Buddhahood.

Ohnuma places these stories into a discrete subgenre of South Asian Buddhist literature and approaches them like case studies, analyzing their plots, characterizations, and rhetoric. She then relates the theme of the Buddha's bodily self-sacrifice to major conceptual discourses in the history of Buddhism and South Asian religions, such as the categories of the gift, the body (both ordinary and extraordinary), kingship, sacrifice, ritual offering, and death.

Head, Eyes, Flesh, and Blood reveals a very sophisticated and influential perception of the body in South Asian Buddhist literature and highlights the way in which these stories have provided an important cultural resource for Buddhists. Combined with her rich and careful translations of classic texts, Ohnuma introduces a whole new understanding of a vital concept in Buddhists studies.

Wonderful collection for children and adults

This collection of poetry has everything, well organized and presented, such a huge selection of poems that could appeal to even the least interested person in poetry. It's a who's who of remarkable work which is easily accessible to children. I am hoping my niece will treasure it throughout her life, as there is something for every age group to discover and rediscover. I wish I had had this when I was young. Nice, contemporary illustrations too. A treasure that every child should have the opportunity to discover on their own terms.

ESRI should have exercised better due diligence before it went to press

most in-book scripts don't work either because they are illogical or because they don't line up wit the data and map documents in the data CD. The quality control on this book before publishing was done and the exercises in the book do not align with the data provided in the CD and it was not worth the money I paid for it. My hope is that the next edition will work those issues out, but the fact that the author is forcing students to use the book, getting paid royalties on the purchase of the book and getting paid by an educational institute to teach using such a book is highly questionable. I don't think this is the author's fault, all together; ESRI should have exercised better due diligence before it went to press. In the learning process, scripts and exercises need to work ... that is pretty fundamental. Here's hoping the next edition is better screened and QA/QC by ESRI.

Great for the novice but needs to be much longer for the expert

I had great expectations for this book, thinking it would go into some detail on novel ways to use various geoprocessing tools together in models. Instead, it uses some common tools in simple models mainly to serve as examples of how ModelBuilder works.

This is of great value to anybody who is new to ModelBuilder and is some use to self-taught power users of ModelBuilder who need a good foundation in the major aspects of the application.

I did learn about iteration, better ways to incorporate Python and how to use if-elif-else logic in models, which alone was worth the cost. But I'd love to see the second edition of the book doubled in size to give room for some advanced methods to build and use models to solve specific types of problems.

As is, this is mostly a really good introduction to ModelBuilder.

Great resource for experienced ArcGIS User

I use this as a text book for classes I teach on ModelBuilder. It is a great resource for anyone looking to learn more about using ModelBuilder to automate and document analysis or other geoprocessing workflows in Esri's ArcGIS for Desktop. ModelBuilder allows users to create automated scripts using a visual interface without the need to be a programmer. This book is not for those new to GIS. Some experience using Esri's ArcGIS for Desktop is a must. Experience using geoprocessing tools to perform analysis is a big help as well.

This book provides hands on experience through the student exercises which use ArcGIS for Desktop and ModelBuilder. This allows students to create models starting at very simple one moving to more advanced one that make use of user specified parameters, iterators, and more. They gain confidence as they move along. The challenge exercises at the end of the book are indeed very challenging and will provide a good test of a students understanding.

I have used this book with both ArcGIS 10.0 and 10.1. There are some minor differences with some of the exercises if you try to work through them with 10.1 instead of the 10.0 the book was designed for. The Author does have an errata he is putting together and I do believes plans to release an updated version for 10.1 soon. Hopefully there will also be one for 10.2 soon as well. I found an couple of minor typos or missing steps in a couple of exercises as well. However if you are familiar with using the geoprocessing tools in ArcGIS for Desktop, you should be able to figure them out and work around them.

Overall a very good book. One I would recommend for any ArcGIS users library.

Realistic, practical, and most importantly, effective advice.

I downloaded “Superhero Six-Pack” a long with close to half a dozen or so other fitness/health related books and I must say that this read is not only the most professional yet easy to understand out of the ones I’ve read so far, but it’s also the main one that has proven to be the most helpful.

What I admire about the author is that he tells it exactly how it truly is, while offering great advice that – for those who are willing – many people will benefit from, I’m sure. Author Markus A. Kassel offers readers a straightforward, realistic approach to strengthening your abs and core – and he does so by not beating around the bush or presenting readers with false expectations and pipe-dreams. I find it refreshing to come across an author that isn’t afraid to show that it truly does take dedication and hard work, and that a model-esque six-pack won’t just appear suddenly overnight. I already have my own personal fitness routine, but I’ve incorporated into it some of the methods that the author discusses throughout the book – and I can definitely say I’ve noticed a difference, as I sure as hell can feel one during the workouts. I give this book a strong 9 out of 10 and I definitely plan on putting what I’ve learned into practice more in the following weeks.

Still on the fence about Superhero Six-Pack? Hopefully, my testimonial might help people decide .... Just do it! For real man, you've got nothing to lose aside from your gut. My gosh, this is serious stuff! After just 2 weeks of going through this program...I've already lost 10 lbs. (of fat mind you) AND I'm only on like the 3/4 level of progressions! WOW! I thought I was above average...but clearly I'm nowhere near "Superhero" level. Markus' programs are seriously the BEST I'VE EVER SEEN!!! I don't say that lightly either...no matter where you're at...this will get you to where you want to be. Simple, easy to follow, no barriers/excuses, progressions, and informative w/o the BS! Great, great stuff! Well done Markus!

I don't eat like he recommends

I bought this with the goal of strengthening my core. I had no intention of getting a superhero six-pack, but for the first time in my life, I have some definition in my midsection. I have only progressed to the 4th exercise after about 4 weeks, but it is already clear that my weak core muscles have been the cause of lower back strains through my years (I'm 35). I feel significantly stronger. I don't eat like he recommends, although he does lay out several options for you to pick which is best for you. I wasn't looking for a diet change, just some tips to add to my already decent eating habits.

All in all, nothing mind-blowing is offered here, but the exercises are certainly improving my overall strength, and the definition is always welcome!

Since 2005, Ryan Licwinko has taught people to succeed on the GMAT, both in classrooms and privately. He became frustrated with the limitations of working under a company and its philosophy. So, he started writing his own lessons and essays on the GMAT. Ryan now works independently with students in southern Connecticut as both a test prep tutor and academic tutor. Spaceland Prep's Endgame: A Finishing Guide to GMAT® Quant is one of the rare prep books that sticks pretty close to its stated goals and audience: it is a polishing book, not a starting book. Of specific assistance are some "this is what the GMAT is looking for" reminders, the thematic recaps of GMAT-stressed concepts, and most helpfully the specific references at the end of every chapter that highlight the exact questions in The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 13th Ed. that match those concepts. Those references are excellent for people putting the last touches on their GMAT study. A few of the chapters may err on the side of assuming more mathematical dexterity than readers possess, particularly in the probability chapter, but some of those assumptions are understandable given that this is supposed to be a finishing guide. Thus, Endgame should not be used by someone new to the GMAT or who doesn't have a working vocabulary for math; there are other books or instructors that would be better for those starting out with the GMAT. The end of chapter summaries of formulas and concepts in chapters 4 and 6 are also valuable for those polishing off their GMAT study. A few typos remain that could be cleaned up, but they do not impact the overall value of this book. If you're finishing up study, and want to gauge your retention of important themes and concepts, Endgame is a very efficient resource for the task.
