What is a tangram? It is more easily seen and understood than defined in words. The origin of the name is not known, but the game itself is of Chinese origin, and for centuries it has been one of the most popular diversions in the Orient.
The tangram is not entirely new to America, since Yankee sea captains brought books of tangram puzzles back from Canton and Shanghai. Edgar Allan Poe was a devotee, while on the other side of the world Napoleon is said to have whiled away his time with them. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the two great modern puzzlers, H. E. Dudeney and Sam Loyd, greatly enlarged the traditional field of tangram situations.
This collection gathers together nearly 330 tangrams, the best creations of both Chinese and Occidental puzzle devisers. Included are some of the most striking Oriental puzzles, carefully selected from rare nineteenth-century books and some of the most inventive and imaginative inventions of Loyd and Dudeney. Although individual tangrams have always been favorite members of most collections of mathematical amusements, to our knowledge this is the first book devoted entirely to this popular form in many decades.
Some of the tangrams in this collection are relatively easy and can be solved without too much brain-straining. Others are difficult, and many demand quite a bit of mental sweat before they are resolved. All, however, are delightful concoctions in recreational form-perception and will provide many hours of pleasure.

Very fun, may not be appropriate for children under 8 years old

We bought this as part of our homeschool curriculum, to be used withLearning Resources Tangrams Smart Pack. My son was able to flip through the book, search for the puzzle he wanted to create, and was able to do most of the puzzles with minimal assistance. The book did need to be propped open, but it is the perfect size to place in a gallon ziplock bag with the Tangrams and taken on trips.

This book is probably the most appropriate for children over the age of eight, with a few exceptions for younger ages if you have a child who is a quick study (this requires an honest look at your child's capabilities). I would not try this on a child younger than the age of eight. However, if you do find it is too overwhelming, you merely need to save it for a few years and he/she will then be ready.

Great for critical thinking, understanding spatial concepts, fine motor development, and basic geometry.

Keeps them busy, occupied, increased their focus, concentration, reasoning, analytical and logical reasoning skill sets. Just top of the line. Every minute worth it in life, huh!!!!

A must for pig ownership.

Today most children and some adults believe pork comes from the grocery store. Van Loon starts with the history of swine to give the reader an understanding of the animal from the ground up. I wasn't sure if I could or wanted to raise pigs, so I bought the book. By the time I finished it I couldn't wait to go get some. Nutrition is so important to raising your own meat, and Van Loon spends a lot of time describing what the impact of certain foods are on the end-product. This helped me make the descisions on what our own pigs would eat. When we took our first pig to the processing plant, they were very impressed by the quality of the meat and we were impressed by the flavor. When we took the second one, it somehow,(150 lbs of pork),was 'mis-placed'- I never got it, hmmm....I think the book was mostly to blame.

This book has a lot of helpful information and illustrations. We had our first litter with the help of this book! I'm sure glad I had it to reference when I needed it. A great investment for anyone starting to raise pigs.

This is a good introduction to pigs and pig raising. There is some good information to glean, but overall the material is a bit dated for current homesteading practices that are focused on pastured pork.

Siringo had settled down to store-keeping in Caldwell, Kansas, when a blind phrenologist, traveling through, took the measure of his "mule head" and told him that he was "cut out" for detective work. Thereupon, Siringo joined the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1886. A Cowboy Detective chronicles his twenty-two years as an undercover operative in wilder parts of the West, where he rode with the lawless, using more stratagems and guises than Sherlock Holmes to bring them to justice and escaping violent death more often than Dick Tracy. He survived the labor riots at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in 1892 (his testimony helped convict eighteen union leaders), hounded moonshiners in the Appalachians, and chased Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch. Once described as "a small wiry man, cold and steady as a rock" and "born without fear," Charlie Siringo became a favorite of high-ups in the Pinkerton organization. Nevertheless, the Pinkertons, ever sensitive to criticism, went to court to block publication of Siringo's book. Frank Morn, in his introduction to this Bison Books edition, discusses the changes that resulted from two years of litigation. Finally published in 1912 without Pinkerton in the title or the text, A Cowboy Detective has Siringo working for the "Dickensen Detective Agency" and meeting up with the likes of "Tim Corn," whom every western buff will recognize. The deeper truth of Siringo's book remains. As J. Frank Dobie wrote, "His cowboys and gunmen were not of Hollywood and folklore. He was an honest reporter.

The book talks to young people where they are. The stories are moving and very real. I feel anyone of any age would do well to read it.
The photographs and poetry are excellent. Not prechy. With 1 in 3 teens admitting to depresion it should be required reading. Would like to see more from this author

Will their love survive?

After falling for Alexander and Alexia in book one, I suspected that things may take a turn for the worse in the second book. After all who's going to read a series where everyone is always happy-go-lucky and in love without any of the drama?
However, this book did not go quite as I expected. While in Dubai, to check on the status of one of his hotels, Alexander and Alexia are forced to deal with some issues from their pasts. As more details of Alexander's sordid history comes to the forefront Alexia starts to doubt her place in his world, not that I blame her. How can this handsome, wealthy, playboy ever really settle down? As these fears continue to weigh on Alexia, Alexander begins to show a pattern of possessive and domineering behavior.
When they return to Zurich, Alexia's worst fears are confirmed when she finds Alexander in a compromising position with a woman from his past. Will these two be able to work past their issues and find love with one another? At this point I'm not so sure.
Thank goodness I already have the third book so I can jump right back into their story and get some answers:)

Really Good Series

This book is much more emotional and intense than the first one, but I have really enjoyed reading both of them. There were many times in this book that Alexander was a little too possessive and too jealous for me, but then he would make up for it later. He definitely has some secrets that are giving him issues, but the question is, does he really love Alexia? Alexia is having lots of trouble trusting Alexander, and having confidence in their relationship. Now let me tell you, Sharlyn G. Branson really knows how to write some scorching, sizzling, hot sex scenes. They definitely don't have any issues there. Warning: This book does have a really big cliffhanger. I want to quickly get started reading the next book to see what happens next. I received this book from the author in return for an honest review.

In this book we see more of Alexia insecurities in the relationship with Alexander. Alex past is coming back to bite him in the butt when Alexia are asking him questions he knew that would hurt her. I can see that Alexander really loves her and he is doing his best to show her. Oh, I so dislike Vanessa by the way. Another cliffhanger. Now I have to find out what's going on. Will their love survive or will it be over for Alexia and Alexander? I can't wait to read the next book.

“Alexia, be more responsible and check your cell from now on.” He sounded like my father, which made me roll my eyes."

“God, how soft your lips are. You’re so sweet. What have you done to me, Alexia? I’m losing myself in you,” he whispered, his lips touching mine. “I want you forever. I want you to be mine. Just mine.”

“You make me want you all the time, Alexia. No other woman has had such power over me. And you must remember this once and for all.”

“I hear every word, baby. It’s you who’s not hearing me. You are made for me. Just for me. I’ve finally met the woman of my life and I want to be with her, with YOU.”

Francesco took a step toward me, hugged me, and we were about to give each other pecks on the cheeks when Alexander grabbed me by the waist and pulled me toward him in a gesture of possession. He was showing a sense of property toward me, keeping me only for himself and preventing any man from touching me. He’d managed to drill that into me already. I hadn’t met a more jealous man in my life.

“We have to talk,” he said in a quiet and seemingly calm voice.
