About the Author
Diane Larsen-Freeman is Professor Emerita of Education, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, and Former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also a Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a conference speaker in over 60 countries of the world and has published over 100 articles in her areas of interest. Her Heinle/Cengage titles include "The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers" (third edition, 2015, co-authored with Marianne Celce-Murcia), "From Grammar to Grammaring" (2003, authored), and the fourth edition of "Grammar Dimensions: Form, Meaning, and Use" (2007, Series Director). From 1980-1985, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was Editor of the journal "Language Learning." In 1997, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, she was selected by ESL Magazine as one of "the ESL pioneers." In 2000, she received the lifetime achievement award from Heinle & Heinle.

A Must For Future Exchange Students

This is an excellent book for anyone who's going to be an exchange student, as it gives the reader a realistic view of what going on the exchange will really entail. It covers settling in, homesickness, culture shock, making friends, learning the language, getting ready to leave, and "reverse culture shock" -- coming home again. Although not every exchange student may experience the stages in the exact order or extent the author describes, most exchange students will be able to identify with what she's saying. I found it very informative and comforting to read this book before going to Ecuador for a year, and it was also helpful to read during the exchange, simply to know that what seemed like bizarre feelings were really fairly normal for exchange students. Do yourself a favor and read this book before you go, you'll be glad you did. It'll leave you feeling a whole lot less in the dark about what's going to happen during your exchange.

A Culture Shock

I'm planning on going to France through a foreign exchange program next year. This book completely caught me off guard. It made me aware of the culture shock an exchange student experiences when adjusting to a new family and lifestyle. The book helps you prepare for your year abroad and for returning home to the U.S. It explains the (about) 8 steps of the exchange process and how each one affects the student. My favorite part of the book, though, were the examples from former exchange students. Their stories helped make the book more insightful, and they helped me to understand what I should do in different situations. I highly recommend the book for future travelers.

Really bad study material...

Let me preface this by saying that I think that the five-day reading plan is a really excellent resource for study, and I look forward to using it for a long time in the future. This "Companion", however, is not good at all. I gave it two stars because it will at least stimulate discussion among Bible study groups. However, the author demonstrates a clear lack of understanding on several subjects which will lead most students down incorrect paths. For instance:

Semitic language and culture. Semitic languages are notable for the ability to simultaneously convey a literal and a deeper metaphysical meaning with a single phrase, and Semitic culture is rich in mythological symbolism and idiom. Even if the you believe that the New Testament was originally written in Greek, it was written by native Aramaic speakers--and the Old Testament was certainly not written in Greek. The author demonstrates a clear lack of knowledge of all things Semitic, discussing Biblical text as if it were originally written in English, with no idiom whatsoever.

The difference between religion and mythology. Genesis is a book of mythological poetry written long before the advent of either history or science. The author, however, insists that it be taken as a literal and accurate recording of events, by modern Western standards. Being "mythological" does not render Biblical writings "untrue", it simply means that their value does not lay in their historical or scientific accuracy. That is what history and science are for. All of the major Christian traditions--Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Anglican Protestant--have long since accepted that science is the best way to answer scientific questions. Accepting mythology as mythology betters our understaning of the Bible; it does not cheapen Christianity.

Translation. I cannot find any reference to an edition in this work, despite constant discussion of specific words and specific passages. Any translation from one language to another is necessarily going to be different every time someone else does it; multiply that by translation from Hebrew/Aramaic into Greek (even if you believe they were originally written in Greek, they were certainly originally THOUGHT OF in Aramaic), from Greek into Latin, and from Greek and Latin into English. That's why there are so many different versions of "the Bible" today, and there certainly are differences in the text.

And all of that is just general overview; getting into specifics would take far too long. This might be a useful resource for junior high students, but I cannot recommend it for anyone with a serious interest in learning about the Christian religion.

Good resource with a caution

I confess I haven't used this companion a great deal yet. I'll just say that it appears to be a helpful resource. But I have to throw in a caution on a theological note. Judging by one brief statement the author makes concerning Romans 6:1-5, he appears to hold to baptismal regeneration. He says, "Note that if baptism is not necessary to salvation Paul's argument fails." Many people agree with baptismal regeneration and so this won't be a problem to them. But if you believe that water baptism is not necessary for salvation then discernment will obviously be necessary with this work. The problem is confusion between the baptism of the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12:13 (which is what Paul is referring to in Romans 6) and water baptism as a visible symbol of that Spirit baptism. If Paul taught water baptism as necessary for salvation, his comments in 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 would be strange indeed.

Introduction

Salsa, the Spanish word for "sauce," can refer to an extremely wide variety of items. Salsas can be fresh (raw) or cooked, thick or thin, chunky or smooth, crunchy, hot spicy, mild, sweet, savory, tart, etc. They can be used as a side dish, sauce, condiment/relish, as an ingredient in other dishes, or even with a dessert. They can be made from vegetables, fruits, or a combination thereof, and are usually served at room temperature, but are sometimes chilled.

Whichever kind you choose, the impact of its flavor depends on the freshness or quality of the ingredients. When good-quality main ingredients such as tomatoes, tomatillos, or mangos are combined with accent ingredients, the result can be a salsa that has the ability to transform the simplest of foods into something fantastic.

Sample recipe:

"Hold onto Your Hat" Habanero Salsa

3 fresh habanero chiles

2 garlic cloves

1/2 medium onion, peeled and cut into half-inch slices

4 ripe plum tomatoes

Juice of 1 small orange

Juice of 1 lime

1 teaspoon dried Mexican oregano

1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

1 tablespoon olive oil

Coarse salt to taste

1. Roast the chiles, garlic, onion, and tomatoes over a direct flame until charred. Cool.

2. Peel the garlic and tomatoes. Remove stem and seeds and finely chop the chiles.

3. Place all ingredients in the work bowl of a food processor and pulse, adding a few teaspoons of water as needed to yield a nicely spoonable consistency. Serve at room temperature or refrigerate until ready to use.

A gem. Still reads very well.

I bought this because it was praised by Sakurai in his _Modern Quantum Mechanics_ book, and also by Gasiorowicz in his book. It is indeed a very well written and lucid book. The traditional wave and matrix mechanics approaches are used, though there's a little bit of Dirac notation (but with round brackets instead of angle brackets!) All the usual topics are here: wave packets, Schrödinger's equation, angular momentum, hydrogen atom, perturbation theory, electromagnetic interaction, scattering, and identical particles. There are helpful background chapters on Fourier techniques and classical mechanics (e.g. Poisson brackets and canonical transformations), a chapter on quantum measurement, one on the correspondence principle, a chapter on transformations of representations, and a final chapter on quantum-statistical mechanics. Overall, the book is very strong on fundamentals, but still manages to be very concise at 369 pages. And, typical of books from this publisher in that era, it's beautifully printed. Used copies seem easy to find, but I hope someone reprints it (Dover, are you listening?)

Superb but for modern courses not introductory

This is the kind of book every physics student should read. It is rigorous, yet highly descriptive. It takes the reader from the fundamentals to well beyond the level of a first and even second course in undergraduate Quantum Mechanics. It even finds space to review fundamentals like classical mechanics and Fourier methods missing from many courses, where the Hamiltonian is just thrown in.

But in the modern age this is its one drawback. The some of the mathematical subtleties may come a little too early for the student. The going is not too heavy though and if an undergraduate math reference is handy the continuity can be maintained.

This is not a flick though book. To get the most out of it, it should be read with pen and paper. It does not set formal exercises in the text (though there are many at the end of each chapter) but the descriptions and derivations have turns that need to be worked through, not just skimmed.

After reading a more hand holding introduction like Griffiths, this book takes it to the next level. Once the student is sure he will pass the exam, he can learn some more stimulating aspects of the subject.

More advanced students can go straight in the effort will be richly rewarded.

Thin but thick!

This thin book (369 pages) is very concise and wide ranging. It has a nice final chapter on quantum statistical mechanics. The book reads well if you are already familiar with the subject. I would also like to see this book reprinted since it reflects a writing style that is a great blend of narrative and mathematical demonstration.
