About the Author

Thomas J. Holt is an Associate Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University, specializing in cybercrime, policing, and policy. He received his Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Missouri-Saint Louis in 2005. He has published extensively on cybercrime and cyberterror in outlets such as Crime and Delinquency, Sexual Abuse, the Journal of Criminal Justice, Terrorism and Political Violence, and Deviant Behavior.

Adam M. Bossler is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Georgia Southern University. He earned his doctorate in criminology and criminal justice from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. His research focuses on examining the application of traditional criminological theories to cybercrime offending and victimization, how law enforcement responds to cybercrime, and exploring innovative correctional programs. His most recent publications can be found in Crime & Delinquency, Youth & Society, American Journal of Criminal Justice, Policing, and Journal of Criminal Justice.

Just As Good the Second Time Around!

I read this book over ten years ago and just recently got around to reading it again. I enjoyed it just as much this time as the first time. As a cancer survivor, I could relate easily to Dr. Siegel's emphasis on the mind-body relationship and all that goes with that premise. I used visual imagery and some of his other recommended treatments during my cancer journey and I agree with everything he says. I love his passion and I love all his anecdotal material as he shares some of his patients' health journeys with us. A most inspiring read! Highly Recommended!

When I learned I had stage 3 Breast Cancer with Lymphatic Involvement I never once thought I would not make it . Having had 3 tragedies in my Life within a 10 mo. period before that including losing my 22 yr old Son to Lung Cancer , MY Daddy to suicide and my sister at 44 to unknown cause. My attitude was that of embracement . I just accepted my Cancer as one more issue or hurdle in Life I needed to get through. Multiple surgeries and I just accepted going through Chemotherapy and did not prolong my decision to do so . I always went in knowing Ok I am going to be on the couch for 2 days after each Chemo session of 4 hours. I had a mindset that I was going to do whatever it takes to get through this and simply did what I had to do. Each week after I went through Chemo I would go into to get the big shot due to my white cells crashing and afterwards my Boyfriend and I would hit the road on a 12 hr drive to go from Texas to New Mexico where his 87 yr old Daddy lived in the middle of the New Mexico dessert. Once there we would stay to help him and his wife of 8 yrs who had Alzheimers. We remodeled his home by tearing out old carpet and laying a nice new tile floor , We cleaned out all his Clutter , took care of his dogs which were overdue for grooming needs and we also worked around his place cutting up old cars and cutting up metals he had laying around for years. We Made some extra money at the scrap yard and came back in time for my next round of Chemo. I was on disability and found it very hard to make ends meet but we did not waste time dwelling on what we did not have or could NOT DO . We kept our focus on what we did have and all that we COULD DO . I was able to return to my job as a fLIGHT Attendant for AAL within 11 and half mos . I live Cancer Free today and have not slowed down to worry about or question WHY. I feel I have a job to do now and hope that my story can serve as an inspiration and give hope to those like me faced with any crisus in their lives. Your MINDSET IS CRITICAL in determining your outcome. FOCUS on the GOOD and reach deep down within and you shall find all that you need to be a Survivor. The last thing I did was alot of research ..about Cancer remedies and remaining Cancer Free ..I found and have been taking this one product for almost 2 yrs now. You Are A Sucker If You Buy This

I found this book in my local library and quickly read through it. After reading the very basic and often misleading advice in the book (play more numbers, buy more tickets, play the same numbers each time, etc), here's my advice: Don't buy or waste your time (all 20 minutes of it) reading this book. Here's why.

- The lottery is a probability game. There is NO WAY to be an 'expert' at beating the system. If I flip a coin 100 times, and I call it correct 74 times, does that make me an expert on how to call a coin flip correctly? Of course not...if anything, I am lucky. Each ball in a lottery machine has the same odds of showing up. So you could see a winning number repeat before you see your numbers come up. That is where his 'play the same numbers' advice is flawed. He makes you think that you are a lock to win by playing the same numbers over and over. Hard reality: Mathematics and probability say you are not a lock even if you play the same numbers for your entire life.
- Lustig has won 7 jackpots, yet his winnings are never described as being much more than $1 million. Why? Because he wins games that have better odds (pick 3's, pick 4's, etc), and just plays a lot. He can't win any 'bonus ball' game because it throws a HUGE wrench into how he plays. And, again to the coin flip example. If we flip 100 times, I call it correct 7 times, am I an expert? Far from it. Just think how many lottery games Lustig has played and NOT won. If he wants to claim his expertise, I'd like to see him break down what he's paid vs. what he's won from the lottery (for example, how much money he invested in playing before he hit each jackpot).
- His advice is simple, at best, and common sense, at worst. It comes down to this: play more. How is that advice to win? Of course if you play more you have a better chance of winning. But you could go through LOTS of cash before you even even come close to breaking even, let alone coming out on top. If you are sitting at a slot machine in Vegas, play $10, you might not win. Put in $100, you might not win. Put in $1,000, you might not win. Get up, and someone puts in $1 and wins. Again, where his advice is flawed. Your investment into the games does not guarantee a positive return. To further that, his simple advice of playing more tickets more often to increase your chance of winning is universally known. So what's he's charging $40 for?

Something tells me that Lustig's income is all from appearances and book royalties at this point. But, for him to claim to be an expert with something that has everything to do with probability and chance is just plain wrong. And the fact that he is so defensive on here against these types of reviews (read the comments of some of the bad ones) goes to show that he knows that he is simply an expert in preying upon the hopes of others.

Save your money

No need to buy the book, just buy more tickets with the money instead. The books basic info-buy a lot of tickets and play the same numbers every week.(I just saved you $40). How did this guy win so much? There is no system or secret. He spends a lot of money on tickets. But keeps reminding the readers to only spend what they can afford. Sorry. If you must read it, wait until it gets to your library.

This book is a scam and i am very surprised that amazon is selling it. dont waste your money. there is no secret 26 pages with the first 7 pages all about his family winning. the last 2 pages nothing. and in between lets just say nothing to write about. all you need is your common sense. He doesnt have a secret noone can predict how the numbers will fall. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY. i am getting my money back....

Title should have been 'Effective Software Project Management'

The authors of this book share many great insights into software project management, many of which I can confirm from my own experience. So why is the book called Effective UI? It does very little to describe tangible steps that need to be taken to introduce more effective design and development practices that will lead to better user experiences. Many insights the authors share such as "the raw materials that go into building a software product are the intelligence, ingenuity, and creativity of the team that builds it" risk sounding trite. Of course it is hard to fault the authors for sharing such insights because they may not be obvious to everyone. But I think it's fair to say that people thinking of buying this book will expect something quite different, as I did. In Chapter 7, for example, they describe how to map high-level workflows to help define requirements, making platform and framework choices, mapping interactions with external systems, defining business logic, how to use revision control and automated testing. Perhaps the authors felt it was necessary to cover these topics, even cursorily, but the topics really belong in a book called "Software Engineering" or "Software Project Management", not a book called "Effective UI". If someone you know has a copy of this book to borrow, you probably will not regret reading it, but I can't recommend buying the book as you will probably be getting something quite different than what you expect.

Want to deliver more effective UIs? Don't waste your money...

If you are looking for a good book on UI design principles, methods, tips and tricks, with concrete examples and suggestions, then don't bother spending your money on this tome. It should have been titled "Effective PM (for beginners)", as it's almost exclusively about project management rather than UI design.

If you are familiar with iterative development practices, agile, the perils of waterfall, requirements analysis, stakeholder relations, team building and the overall software project management process, then you will find nothing new in this book. The first few chapters read like a marketing brochure for the Effective UI consulting group. If you know little of these areas, or have a manager/stakeholder that you want to try to convert, then this book might provide some value as a high level introduction to software project management.

To me, this was very disappointing. I have dozens and dozens of O'Reilly books, decades of SW dev experience from C-level on down, and this is the first O'Reilly book that I've purchased that I would send back (if that just wasn't worth the time/trouble to do so). I'll probably just give it to the Goodwill charity, and hope that someone can benefit from it.

With it's current title, I rate this barely as a 1, and then only because they included some interesting, albeit barely relevant, quotes from Clausewitz and Sun Tzu. If they had changed the title to "Effective PM - An Introduction to Software Development management/practices" then it might rate a 3.

O'Reilly dropped the ball on this one, IMO.

Exceptional Insight Into The Value & Process of UI/UX Design

This invaluable review of the Processes & Business Benefits of User Interface/User Experience Design, provides so much unique and hard won insight into the process of developing superior user interfaces, the goals of users and the business, and in quantifying the benefits of UX design that I can only award it an outstanding Five Star review. One observation, that full engagement with the true goals of users is the end purpose of UI Design, is in itself worth the cost of this excellent book. But in spite of my viewing this book as revolutionary and offering outstanding and unique insights into what User Experience is, how to achieve it and what its benefits are, I do have one major criticism of this otherwise excellent book, its narrative approach and careful explication of its arguments on what the team at "Effective UI" lead to step by step discovery of these insights; there doesn't appear to be a top-down structure allowing for easy browsing of the book; it must be studied at length. Also, an experienced student of Interaction Design and User Experience cannot easily find what the new insights of this book are at a single glance, or find its prescription for a particular step of the design process.

This is an excellent and insightful book on UI Design and User Experience based on the consulting experience of a leading firm in this industry. But the book narrating their experience must be studied, it is difficult to browse.
