Best in print!

Ian Barbour's many books may well be the best in print of writings on the relations of Science, Philosophy, and Religion! This small volume focuses on a central area in all his books: How do religious myths, scientific models, and metaphysical paradigms convey objective truths about the real world? God did not literally create the world in a week once upon a time; our little "Big Bang" was not actually the origin of Everything; there never was a time when there was no time! Beyond religious and scientistic fundamentalisms [inflated supernaturalism and mechanistic, materialist reductionism] lies Barbour's careful analysis of the various complex ways our language conveys meanings and truths, at many levels.

These insights are incorporated into his comprehensive RELIGION AND SCIENCE: HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY ISSUES, 1997 [Gifford Lectures], and the smaller compact WHEN SCIENCE MEETS RELIGION: ENEMIES, STRANGERS, OR PARTNERS? 2000.

Science and religion aren't so far apart...

This is a very interesting and insightful comparison of how the organizing and research methods of science apply equally well to religion and the ways in which both can be analyzed using similar methodology. Both science and religion seek empirical results from theoretical questions, relying on faith in the systemic process (science on unqualified induction; religion on experiential practice) to reach their goals.
I read this as a resource for a college course in the Philosophy of Science and was profoundly moved by the philosophical similarities of scientific and religious thought and pursuit. I agree with the author that the differences between science and religion are not as great as advertised, but are fewer and less meaningful than scientific atheists would assert.
I highly recommend this for people who aren't sure how to perceive the science vs. religion discussion.

Book Three in the Billionaires in the City Series. Enjoyed But Not As Much As the First Two.

3.5 Stars. I enjoyed this book but I did not feel it was as good as the first two.

Victoria Green is the CEO of a multi-billion dollar hardware company and her life was in danger. In walks Dean Carey, handyman, who earns extra money helping Grace with her extravagant party planning business. He becomes a temporary body guard for Victoria until she finds a permanent one.

There were times Victoria did not appear to have any common sense and not too many smarts for brilliant business woman. I would think if someone's life was in danger they would listen to the professionals who knew what they were doing instead of taking so many stupid chances with her life. It became a frustrating point for me. Logan was a hunk of a man but there was something about him practically begging Victoria for a relationship that did not appeal to me. He was a little too desperate for my tastes. Yes, he should have told her how he felt and what he wanted but not to the extent that he did. That is just my opinion and my feelings on the matter.

Would I recommend? Yes, if you are reading the series then you should read this third installment. Would I read it again? Probably not. Once was enough and I am not sorry I read it. You should read it an judge for yourself.

Tempting the Boss

Nice read. The characters were entertaining, liked the relationship between Dean and his sister. Victoria was an intelligent, capable woman who took over her family business when her father passed. She's trying to reconcile with her brother. Dean is trying to protect her from an unknown threat.

3.75 stars-- TEMPTING THE BOSS is third stand alone novella in Mallory Crowe’s adult, contemporary Billionaires in the City romance series. This is CEO/billionaire businesswoman Victoria Green, and repairman Dean Casey’s storyline. We were first introduced to Victoria and Dean in book 2-Teasing the Boss. TEMPTING THE BOSS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. There is some timeline crossover between book 2 and the current storyline.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Dean and Victoria) TEMPTING THE BOSS focuses on the attacks against Victoria Green and the investigation into who is responsible. After saving Victoria from an attack at a business function organized by event planner Grace Bell (Teasing The Boss), Dean declares himself Victoria’s personal bodyguard until otherwise notified. When a trip out of town results in another attempt at Victoria’s life, Dean begins to suspect someone close. What ensues is Victoria’s denial of what Dean believes is the obvious, and Dean’s attempts to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love.

The relationship is one of immediate attraction but Victoria and Dean travel in completely different social, economic and personal circles. Victoria is billionaire businesswoman whose father is gravely ill; Dean is a repairman who has been raising his younger sister since the death of their parents, years before. What ensues is a sexual relationship that comes with an expiry date if and when Victoria’s attacker is caught. Mallory Crowe kicks up the $exual eroticism in TEMPTING THE BOSS-the $ex scenes are provocative and intense.

The secondary and supporting characters include cameos from Grace and Simon (book2) as well as Dean’s younger sister Katy; Victoria’s brother Terry and his new fiancée Joslyn Devaroux return home to sit vigil over Victoria and Terry’s dying father. One of Victoria’s personal bodyguards Jace Lance will find himself the victim of an assault-Jace’s story will be told next in book four-TRUSTING THE BOSS.

The world building continues to focus on the billionaire CEOs, and the men and women that they love. Each storyline is a stand alone but are interconnected through a crossover timeline or characters, who will be introduced in a previous novella story. There is always a threat that must be extinguished; and a happily ever after to be found.

TEMPTING THE BOSS is another fast paced and interesting storyline of insta-love between two people from differing social and economical backgrounds. There is mystery and suspense; romance and love; family loss and personal grief. Money and power may not pave the way to happiness but there is always somebody hoping for more. Mallory Crowe continues to put her spin on the billionaire storyline and it is nice to finally see a female at the head of a billion dollar corporation.

I hate to admit it

I am an incredibly stubborn person.... so needless to say buying this book was a huge step for me in regards to pushing my pride aside and realizing my social skills towards women needed a tune up. If you are like me you might feel some resistance towards admitting your game could use some work. A friend of mine actually had gone out with Adam on a few sessions personally and highly recommended him. If this friend wasn't my best, or someone I had trusted for years, I would have never considered a self help book like this. After reading this book I have noticed an immense change in my attitude which has not only transferred over to my work but just the enjoyment of life in general. I have been able to accomplish things in regards to meeting women that I never thought possible. After watching a few of Adams videos online I am in awe of what he has accomplished in regards to spreading his confidence to others. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

About the Author

Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck have been good friends and colleagues since 1970. Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors. They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels.

Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science , in 1976. That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now in its thirteenth edition. In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team. Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects. Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio.

Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades. Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything. Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

An excellent and very thorough introductory text.

This text covers a lot of material, and manages to do so quite thoroughly and even fairly readably. It is a useful textbook for any "Intro to Geology" class, and would even be useful for someone interested in exploring the subject on their own, outside of a classroom.

Earth - an average introductory textbook

This book has dozens of errors, but in its defense, I must say that every introductory textbook I've used or reviewed has similar errors. For example, thermal expansion due to daily temperature fluctuations does NOT fracture rocks. Fire fractures rocks, and local fires can occur in many deserts. The photo of a rock split is actually due to ice (not frost) wedging. Deserts can be freezing. The book does not address the importance of past climates. Most of North America's landforms were formed under wet, warm climates, not today's. The hydrologic cycle should be expanded to the geohydrologic cycle, which incorporates plate tectonics. Plate tectonics, as presented, is rather primitive. We're in, I'd say, 3rd generation plate tectonics, but it is not being taught. Mountain glacial landscapes are entirely misinterpreted, based on a false paradigm originating in the 1840s. Yosemite Valley is far more a relict tropical landscape than a glaciated one, and Bridalveil Falls has existed for 10s of millions of years before glaciation. Evolution of desert landscapes is equally as bad. The authors don't understand pediments, which are exhumed weathering fronts (as in Joshua Tree National Park) or exhumed detachments (as in the Mojave Desert). Etc., etc.

This book is really great. It's pretty current with a lot of the geological events that have happened in the last few years. It has the earthquake in Japan listed, which I was not expecting. It's big and makes my backpack very heavy with needing to take my laptop to school as well. But that's just part of schooling I think. This one does NOT include the MASTERINGEOLOGY.COM key, so if you NEED that for class it'll be an extra purchase. I believe I was able to purchase the key for an extra $35 on the web-site. A lot of kids in my class bought the text in an online format and can only access it through their computer, they all told me it's a pain in the butt. So I think if you have the choice(and the money) to get the hard copy, that would be best.

The book is very good and addresses all Federal and State requirements. Very easy to understand and well written. I will be interested in getting the instructor training manual as soon as it becomes available. I miss having review questions at the end of each chapter. I also miss discussion questions for the students to discuss in class. I like the pictures showing skills being done, as it gives definite guidelines to follow.

Do not buy this item it does not provide any way of getting the answers and the company will not sell the answers to anyone that is not a nurse. If you are trying to self teach this is not the book for you.

The book was very informative. It really gave me the information I need to pass the CNA exam. I had all the information I needed to know before I purchased the item. The teacher told me what book to pay and it was right on. Getting used was also the way to go. The book was in real good shape and it had highlighted the main points I need to know so that was nice. My daughter and I enjoyed it immensely.

This book gives a great example of how a little girl overcame the odds against her. It is a book about strength and shows the good consequences of doing whats right. My daughter is 5 1/2 and had me read it to her every day until we had to return it to the library.
