If you have more than a few employees, you probably pay a lot of worker's compensation premiums each year. If so, you should rush to buy Ed and Scott Priz's book Worker's Compensation: A Field Guide for Employers. The father and son workers' compensation consultants help businesses ensure their compensation policies cover their employees at the price they should pay. They work to prevent premium overcharges and help business owners determine the accuracy of their experience modification factors, which can greatly increase or decrease premiums.

Priz describes when workers' compensation coverage is required and how each state regulates the rates. Priz also describes typical work comp policy construction, important because even savvy business owners are often mystified by their insurance policies. He also describes federal workers' compensation exposures business owners may have. For example, what if one of your employees is asked to repair a dock on Lake Huron? That should be covered under your standard work comp policy, right? Not so fast. Because Lake Huron is "navigable," your injured employee may try to assert a federal workers' compensation claim, which can be significantly more expensive and not covered under a standard work comp policy.

One of the most important points the book makes is that business owners should understand how their premiums are calculated and Priz can help you avoid costly errors. Priz also offers tips for enhancing your relationship with your agent and broker. Let me interject my experience here. I expected this book to be an overview of workers compensation claims management and handling. However, this seems more suited for an underwrite or claims adjuster. This book did not meet my expectations and talked little; if at all about claims management, the use of third party administrators, light duty and return to work programs, defense strategies, activity checks, etc.

What a fantastic introduction to the philosphy of modern neuroscience and medicine.
Farah provides a clear, consise introduction in the field of neuroethics, which she notes is a field which deserves its own classification. She follows up with intereting chapters about current ethical delimas, such as non-medical use of cognitive enhancers such as Adderall and also fMRI practices in diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases before they become clinically significant.

As a undergraduate interested in philosophy without a background in bioethical issues, this was a awesome primer for me. The author strikes a great balance between theoretical philosophy and relevant issues in current medical practice. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the future of neuroscience and how it will affect all of our lives. Undergraduates, graduate students as well as pleasure readers will enjoy this book for its novel perspective on an important topic

Terribly written book

This book was used as the main textbooks in my university level Neuroethics class. While the actual content of the book is interesting and detailed, the grammar, sentence structure, and flow of the book in general is awful. I caught myself reading sentences three or four times just trying to figure out what the author was trying to say. Every sentence was an unfocused jumble of incorrectly used punctuation. A word of advice to teachers, if you want your students to enjoy, or even understand the subject of Neuroethics, find a better piece of literature to teach it with.

Too much repetition and hype

Repetitive generalizations. Much of the text devoted to justifying a need for the book's subject. Much is written from an outsider's perspective with little in the way of concrete examples but lots of hypothetical drama in this overly long text. The included selected readings from active neuroscientists are better than the author's introductions to each main section. The "Mind Wars" covers the subject better, even though neuroethics is not its sole focus.

It is a great relief to have at last a good book on Lamarck in English, neither partisan through patriotism, nor distorted by dislike of Darwin. Burkhardt gives us an excellent introduction to Lamarck, his contemporaries and predecessors, and to the scientific bodies and institutions in revolutionary Paris...Exceptionally well written. (A. J. The first modern book length study of Jean Baptiste Lamarck, published in 1977, this book addresses Lamarck's revolutionary idea of organic mutability, and thus his place as the true founder of the theory of evolution. Scholarly yet highly readable, this book is a great resource for those who want to know more about the impressive work of this great, shamefully treated genius.

An important book for anyone who wants to understand modern biology

This book should be read by anyone interested in life sciences. It outlines major styles of modern biological thinking about evolution. It makes a convincing case of an extraordinary influence of Lamarck writings on our today's understanding of evolution. The book is strictly scholarly. It does not follow emotional and political battles of the time. It stands neither for Lamarck nor against his work. It just gives a competent account of historical facts along with detailed interpretation suitable for understanding modern biology. Of course the facts described in this book were well known to evolutionary scholars but were not accessible to general readers. Evolutionary theorists have long determined that all major variants of Darvin's evolutionary theory were in fact influenced by and compatible with Lamarck's work. Reportedly Darwin himself has been a devoted Lamarkian (for more details see for instance Gould's The Structure of Evolutionary Theory.) Yet the popular opinion supports an idea that work of Darwinian evolutionists is in a profound disagreement with the ideas advocated and sometimes invented by Lamarck.
The author, Richard Burkhardt, masterfully navigates between gossips, reliable historical facts, and meritorious biological data. Valuable insight into the development of evolutionary theory

Lamarck tends to be painted as "the one who got it all wrong". This book is extremely useful in presenting not only his theory but also its context, social and historical. The text is detailed without becoming boring. No attempt is made to glorify Lamarck. Instead, the focus is firmly on giving the reader an accurate picture of how Lamarck's theoretical views on evolution came to be, and how they should be understood in relation to other views current at the time. I found the book a very refreshing read.
