The plot itself was just...wow. Gripping. Compelling. Killer-crazy intense. It made for a journey that was everything and more: suspenseful, shocking, heartbreaking, and hopeful.

And A.R. Torre's writing was stunning; her grip onto he heroine's mind so strong you couldn't help but think all the macabre, sensual thoughts along with Deanna. That, along with the book's multiple POVs, really gave the story an unparalleled dynamic that had me gritting my teeth as I turned the pages for moremoremoreMORE.

Messed up but SO interesting

That was a pretty messed up read but so interesting. Jessica aka Deanna clearly has demons that she is fighting with. And to help curb the appetite of those demons she locks herself away into apartment 6E. She makes money by web camming (a sickly fascinating career by the way) and her only interaction with others is either over the web, occasionally on the phone and through her door. She has had this existence for three years and this book is a peek into why she is living this way and what happens when her orderly yet dysfunctional word is turned upside down by a missing girl.

Much of the book is spent setting up the life of Jessica, how she lives without going outside, who her clients are, and her daily routine. For about the first half of the book, I was intrigued but wondering where in the world the book was going...until you get there. What happens when Jessica's little world is set askew by an AMBER alert. You become accustom the Jessica's world, how she lives, why she does what she does. You become unreasonably comfortable with the way things are and then you along with Jessica are abruptly forced to face many of the things that you have been hiding from.

This book is probably not for everyone, as it was pretty crazy. It's only erotic in sense of description and Jessica's choice of career. The book itself is more of a psycho-erotic thriller. I am cannot wait to find out where the sequel is going to go, because while you are not left hanging, Jessica's story is clearly not over.

Scary, creepy and intriguing

Oh my this book was not what I expected at all. Now my third read by this author, I now realize, I need to expect the unexpected.

Once the story put me on the edge of my seat I couldn't put it down. Not even close to what I normally read, but it was chosen by my book club and since I was familiar with the author's style and enjoyed her previous books I joined in the 'fun'.

Note: There's nothing funny about this book. It's written beautifully and there's angst throughout. Not for the faint at heart, and different doesn't begin to describe this story. When I realized there was a child involved I cursed myself for signing up for the 'fun', but I have to say it was worth every agonizing moment.

The book does not end in a cliffhanger so may be read as a standalone even though there are more books available. Once I get up the courage and read a few lighthearted books I'll be sure to jump in again. Deanna Madden is one crazy character.

About the Author
Anthony Sully (DesRCA, FCSD, FRSA, FHEA) has studied art and interior design at undergraduate and post-graduate level, and has practised interior design on a freelance basis and as an employee working with designers and architects. He has designed many projects, which have gained public recognition and awards and has been the course director for five degree programmes in the UK and a visiting professor to two institutions in the USA.
He has  written two books previously published in 1970 and 2012 and continues to  research and engage with current trends and developments. He is also an artist in acrylic and digital media.

This volume of translations of Mahadevi Varma’s feminist political essays is the first of its kind. While some of these essays, especially those from Mahadevi Varma’s Hamari Shrinkhala Ki Kariyan collection have been translated by Neera K. Sohoni and published under the title Links in the Chain (Katha, 2003), there is no sustained treatment of Varma’s political thinking in one, accessible volume. While there is ample work on Varma in Hindi, scholars of feminism (and students of Hindi who are in the nascent stages of language acquisition) have nowhere to turn for a comprehensive sampling of her work. Mahadevi Varma is also one of the most difficult writers to access even for trained scholars of Hindi language and literature. Her highly Sanskritized diction and her stylized prose sketches make her work a pleasure to read in the original but daunting to translate into English. This volume has contributions from some of the most highly regarded Hindi experts. In the editor’s introduction to the volume of translations a brief biographical sketch followed by an analysis of the political climate of Northern India has been provided so that the reader unfamiliar with India of the 1920s-1940s will have the necessary historical context to place her work. The introduction to the volume also raises the issue of why she gave up writing poetry and turned solely to writing prose when she became involved with the movements for women’s rights and national independence. Finally, the volume provides feminist cultural historians a rich archive of how Indian women like Mahadevi Varma were actively negotiating their lives as women, activists, artists, teachers, and married women. This work will be of use to scholars of Hindi language and literature in the US/European academy and should be of interest to cultural and feminist historians of modern India. This volume will introduce Mahadevi Varma’s literary scope to an English-speaking audience, and will serve as a reference for feminist historians of the nationalist period in the Indian subcontinent.

Get your students to speak, let them make mistakes, help them map out the language, and don't buy this book!

Honestly, I could not sell this book back fast enough. The one semi-redeeming quality about it is the colloquial expressions contained in each chapter, with notations when they are from Canadian French. Even then, many outdated expressions are included, and little to no context is provided to help learners not only remember the expression, but allow them to be able to use them appropriately. I was also not impressed with the quality of the DVD, or the videos available from the publisher online. Not only were they not authentic materials (i.e. created by a native speaker for other native speakers), each time we attempted to use the videos, they froze and we were unable to fully view them. Thankfully we seldom used the activities outlined in the book, as they reminded me of the boring activities found in my high school French books. Although some teachers may find it easier to plan their lessons with the aid of a textbook, my experience with this book has only further cemented my belief that conversation is probably best taught without relying solely on a textbook. This book is intermediate at best.

I loved this book, it took an informal approach to learning French. Students can be able to learn how to structure conversations using this book. Unfortunately this book is more for intermediate French speakers and not beginners.

Great book for learning French

we used it in my french conversation class and I think it's a great set up for a book. It has a lot of french expressions and pronunciation points as well as useful vocabulary.
