Thorough, Eloquent, Admirable

Although I feel unequal to doing justice to this excellent one-volume, collaborative history of the world, I want it to be noted that the claim in an earlier review that the Holocaust is omitted from this history is unfounded. This reviewer has obviously checked the index and the table of contents, noted a full chapter for "World War II" yet no index entry for the term "Holocaust," and has decided on that basis to slander an entire roster of historians, including, only among others, Jacques Barzun, Richard Hofstadter, John Garraty and Peter Gay (co-editor with Garraty of the entire volume and, I believe, himself Jewish) with some sort of hidden agenda, presumably anti-Semitism. To quote the Columbia History itself, from the "World War II" chapter:

"The impact of the Nazis' dreadful racial fantasies further exacerbated the situation [the post-war damage]. Some 6 million Jews and countless other innocents had been exterminated. The horrors of the concentration camps and gas chambers left memories that it would take a long time to erase. These profoundly affected the climate of the postwar world." (p. 1068).

I found this by looking under "Jews" in the index, sub-entry, "German persecution of" for which there are three entries, including the following, from the discussion of post-war race relations in the U.S.:

"The reaction to Hitler's nonsense about race and his slaughter of 6 million Jews because of their supposed racial inferiority could not help stirring the consciences of many white Americans." (p. 1141).

These are both from the 1981 printing. I don't believe the book has had more than one edition, originally published in 1972.

It's a shame to have to defend this book from someone who declines to even read the single chapter from which they deduce its hidden "political agenda." The work is both extraordinarily useful and an admirable demonstration of American learning - the premise, as advertised in the foreword by then-president of Columbia University William J. McGill, was to show that the history of the world, from the formation of the universe down to the present day, could be authoritatively treated entirely within the history department of a great American university. Thus each chapter is written by a Columbia-affiliated expert on that particular period (with some authors taking more than one chapter). It doesn't appear to me that any period or region is given short-shrift, especially considering that the book was intentionally limited to one volume, which extends here to just under 1200 pages.

The chapters are edited for a style approaching uniformity, yet often the writing reaches to eloquence, which must have flowed from the original author; Jacques Barzun's concluding chapter, "The State of Culture Today," is worthy of being read as a free-standing essay. And while most of the chapters have this free-standing, "encyclopedic" quality - making it a useful reference even if you haven't read it through -, they also allude to and ultimately complement each other so that continuous, if not seamless, reading of the book is possible to do with a good deal of pleasure.

I suppose unfortunately that it doesn't make sense to keep a book like this in print, given that the advance of historical research in the past 30 years may have surpassed some of the book's information, but perhaps a second edition could be updated and published by today's Columbia history faculty - I wonder if they are capable of matching their predecessors' feat with such thoroughness and grace?

A solid work on world history

The Columbia History of the World one of the few history books (like those of Nicholas Starling) that has impressed me because of its scholarly and "appropriately-detached" approach to certain emotional issues in world history. It does not impose upon the reader traditional biases and subjectivity but rather, it gives the facts as they happened, presents the common perceptions attendant to them, and allows the reader to form his own judgement and draw his own conclusions. There is no also no overbearing ethno-centrism, no unnecessary prejudices, no "good guys" or "bad guys" -- just a clear-flowing, unadulterated presentation of the last thousands of years of human history. I am not an expert of history nor do I claim to be. I am simply a history buff who finds thrill in world history as if it were a David Morrell or Robert Ludlum novel. I have read about four general world history texts (Gombrich, Roberts, Davis, Garraty) and I must say that Columbia will be my all-time favorite.

The author here demonstrates why these young heroes have enjoyed a lasting appeal to readers of children's classics by Stevenson, Kipling and Henty, among many others. He shows why the political intent of many of these stories has been obscured by traditional literary criticism, a form of criticism itself moulded by ideals of empire and ‘Englishness’. Throughout, imperial boyhood is related to wide-ranging debates about culture, literacy, realism and romance. This is a book of interest to students of literature, social history and education.

A Refreshingly Efficient Way to Learn

This was about the 3rd Japanese language book I picked up. After taking a few College courses and teaching myself for several years (skimming through at least 50 Japanese textbooks) I have to say this book has the most efficient format I have come across.
The first few chapters teach basic sentence patterns that one can start using right away; I started practicing with my Japanese friends after only the first chapter. The vocabulary is cleverly introduced through amusing stories making it easy to remember. The explanations of the grammar are written in plain English and easy to understand. After finishing the 22 chapters I would estimate that any reader would be able to have a lively conversation in Japanese. I did feel that it was necessary for me to read each chapter twice and listen to the CD.

The book also has:
Quick self-tests which I found to be helpful practice.
An appendix with counters and verb and adjective conjugation.
A glossary in case one has forgotten a definition from a previous chapter.

Another important note is that this is one of the very few Japanese learning books that teaches how to use casual Japanese. Polite Japanese is also covered, but learning both makes understanding Japanese grammar easier. Casual Japanese is also what one is likely to hear the most in Japan if one has friends.

The only thing that keeps this book (with the CD) from being a complete study course is that the Japanese is written in romaji. Apparently that was the convention for Japanese self learning books in the 90s. Fortunately there are many good books, websites and apps for learning hiragana and katakana. There are even a few good resources out there for learning kanji if one looks hard enough.

This book is great only under one condition: you want to learn only spoken Japanese. I began with this book and quickly noticed the lack of kana. I thought nothing of it, until my copy of Japanese for Everyone arrived. It was then that I realised I was in a very bad situation. I had to relearn *everything* because I now had to learn how to write it. I lost close to a month of time because of this. If you a serious about learning Japanese, then skip over this book---it is the first Teach Yourself book I did not enjoy. Get a copy of Japanese For Everyone instead.This gets 2 stars solely for the fact that it can be a good reference until a better reference is found.

perfectly crazy way to organize a book

All I can say is that this is a perfectly crazy way to organize a book. I've been studying languages for 45 years (I am professional translator) but I've never seen anything like this. I don't mind that they seem to have amputated the first year or two of their "complete language course" and that it seems to start in the middle of everything, with no rhyme or reason; what I mind is that, after the first three lessons or so, there is NO TRANSLATION OF ANY OF THE DIALOGUES. You get a dialogue in Japanese, then there is NO TRANSLATION of any of the words in the dialogue! Not even if you look the word up in the back of the book! What you get is something like U5, SL4, which, translated into English, means Unit 5 (Chapter 5), Society and Language, Section 4. So it takes you perhaps 5 or 10 minutes to find the meaning of even one word. I've been listening to the CD for 6 months and I've got all sorts of stuff going around in my head without the slightest idea of what it means. What kind of language course is this? I prefer to listen to Japanese films with sub-titles, at least that way I know what they're saying. I'm serious.
Whoever put this book together is crazy. It might be all right if you already know the language basically, like you studied 3 years of Japanese 10 years ago and want to brush up a little bit, but don't tell me it's a "complete course", that's just a lie. I've never seen anything organized this way, it just goes around in circles. For example, if I learn one pronoun, "I", why not teach me the other pronouns too, while we're at it, for example, "you"? Instead it goes around in circles. I'd say if you don't know any Japanese, don't buy this "complete course". whatever you do. Buy anything else, but not this.

Since 2006, Michael Knoke has been Director of Investigations for Express Scripts, Inc., a Fortune 100 Company and one of the largest Pharmacy Benefit Managers in the industry. His responsibilities include managing such issues as background screen escalations, government security clearances, drug testing, workplace violence, and corporate investigations. Prior to joining Express Scripts, he was a Sr. Manager of Corporate Security and Safety for Kelly Services, Inc. and he was the superintendent of corporate security for Union Electric Company in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1994, Mr. Knoke was an executive-on-loan to the U.S. Olympic Committee in St. Louis where he developed standards for volunteers, and implemented and directed security for the U.S. Olympic Festival. Prior to joining corporate America, Mr. Knoke enjoyed a successful career in public law enforcement, rising to the rank of Commander of the Crime Prevention Unit for Florissant, Missouri, the city continuously recognized as the safest city west of the Mississippi River with a population of fewer than 100,000. He completed his undergraduate work in Business Management at National-Louis University. He is board certified in Security Management, currently serves as Vice Chairman for the ASIS International Standards & Guidelines Commission and is a past president of the Professional Certification Board (PCB) for ASIS International.

About the Author
George recently retired after eleven years in the chemical industry and thirty years in local government. Born in Hartlepool, County Durham, both his father and grandfather were railwaymen and he fell in love with railways and in particular steam locomotives at the very time when main line steam was on the way out. Being simultaneously long- and short-sighted, he was somewhat surprised to be turned down by British Railways when he applied to become an engine driver. Since the railways didn't want him, he decided to write about them instead and has written extensively for railway magazines over the last decade. His first book, Wylam: 200 Years of Railway History, was published in 2012. For the last two years he has been completing a post-graduate 'Certificate in Railway Studies' run jointly by the National Rail Museum and the University of York. He is married with three grown-up children.

Valuable reference to all facets of heterocyclic chemistry

This book gives a thorough review of the chemistry of each particular class of heterocycles, covering structure, reactivity, and synthesis. Unique to this book is a coverage of the organometalic chemistry associated with each class. It is my opinion that this book is a touch better than the Thieme and Gilcrest heterocyclic books, based mostly on the organization of material. I do wish, however, that the authors had given aminoheterocycles a bit more attention!

Has lots of good tips with great examples

[[VIDEOID:39093261]]The approach covered is primarily concerned with the use of line, development of form, and the simplified design of anatomy. It doesn't go into contour drawing, shading and expression.

The many illustrated examples are aimed at helping students develop a feel for the form and volume of figures they draw. To that aspect, I think it does a very good job.

The use of simple geometric shapes as drawing guides are simple to understand. Not only that, Michael Hampton also builds onto to those simplified mannequins with lots of clearly illustrated muscles. The muscle groups are visualised very distinctly in the examples. They are colour-coded to bring attention those that affect form when the body is in different positions.

I like the part on finding landmarks -- bones that are near the skin. Colour-coded and shown very clearly, with rotating views from front to back.

The book does have head drawing but the focus is on the form rather than the details of the features, although the examples do show the details. It still covers enough for for anyone to draw a decent head.

One thing that's missing is the mention of figure proportions, like how many heads tall a body, length of an arm, etc. That I think will complete the book. There's nothing on bones and you won't learn how muscle works, but this isn't an anatomy reference book. That said, having an anatomy reference book to go along will be extremely helpful.

This is a useful book for artists learning to create and pose their own figures. Highly recommend for beginner and intermediate artists.

This will become your favorite figure drawing book

I read the first chapter of this book and took an online class by Michael Hampton. I really wanted to read further into the book, and I'm so glad I got it. This book will fast become a classic in figure drawing right along with Andrew Loomis.
First, the book is broken down into gesture drawing and landmarks of the body. This will help you structure the skeleton and will get you familiar with where the muscle masses will go later. Most importantly, gesture drawing will help you pose the body in a dynamic and natural way. The gesture is the best way to get more interesting drawings and the breakdowns in the book are easy to follow and easy to complete.
The book moves on to the structure of the head and how to detail the features. With these three parts, the body is complete, and you will walk away knowing where to place everything. Then it details the features of the body like the arms, legs, hands, and feet. The instruction ends with understanding how fabric works on the body and how to use light and shade.

The book has colorful and detailed illustrations and examples. The book is broken down in such a way that it will be easy to come back to sections and use those sections as reference.

My only complaint is that it took me so long to add this book to my collection.

absolutely fantastic

Amazing book. Excellent photographs and imaging, and just enough writing to cover the gist of it. I read it as a supplement in med school, for personal interest, and long articles would've made me put it aside. This is NOT a treatment guide but really an atlas of conditions that may present to peds ER. I found a case I saw in the ER that puzzled me and had to show the book to my attending. I also made a great presentation about child abuse based off this.
