I am teaching a course on Animal/Human relationships in visual media and this book is wonderful--I will use it as a text next time around. It is one of only a few books that directly address animals in visual media--all kinds--which is wonderful as a matter of educating on the topic. It is also fresh and informative---critical examination.

Rather than thinking of the early modern text as something simply reconstituted in its different incarnations, these essays make clear that different media force a rethinking of the terms that we use to envision, conceptualize, and even to see the work of drama.

Not the Top Book on Craps

I have enjoyed reading all of Frank Scoblete's craps books, "Forever Craps," "Beat the Craps Out of the Casinos," and "The Craps Underground," and I respect his judgment as a gambling authority. But I have to disagree with his five-star review of this particular book.

The book is written by someone who has just learned to practice a controlled throw having taken a class from golden touch and the book is therefore the early judgments of someone who really doesn't have a full grasp of the technique of dice control as would someone who has been involved with the skill as would Sharpshooter and Scoblete. These are the thoughts of a novice and as such you have to take them with a big grain of salt. In another year his thoughts might be different.

Maybe writers stick together and that's why Scoblete gave the book such a good rating. There is a tremendous amount of fluff in the book about dice challenges between Wong and unbelievers that are truly boring and comments throughout by people who are not themselves controlled shooters. Who cares what these people think? They don't know anything! Their ideas and opinions are worthless but they do take up space in an otherwise somewhat skimpy book.

If you want to read a book on precision dice shooting, then get Sharpshooter's book before you get this one.

A must have in your craps library

You must own this book if you are considering dice control!!! Stanford Wong is giving you info not trying to you sell something else. His practice tips are spot on and of course the math is perfect.

A good starter if you're new to advantage craps play

This was the first book I read on precision shooting and advantage craps play. At a time when I was ready to give up on craps as hopelessly random, this book drove home the basic concepts of precision shooting and advantage play. The advice paid immediate dividends only a month after reading; I realized consistent, improved results on my throws, and was able to classify and bet smartly on other players. As a result, I'm now enjoying the game much more and seeing improved dollar returns.
The key is that it delivered the concepts in dosages that I could digest as a newbie. This made it less daunting to get started on practicing/training at home. Also, the book gave me the "hooks" upon which to hang the more expansive knowledge I'm now getting in books such as the "Mad Professor's Crapshooting Bible", and "Beating the Craps Out of the Casinos". I honestly don't think I could handle the Mad Prof if I hadn't read Wong first!
All that being said, I thing Wong could probably use a better ghost-writer or editor to help him organize the information a little more logically. You may find yourself jumping around this book from section-to-section.
Also, be warned that about half the book is spent on "front-line" tales that, while somewhat entertaining journalism, are less educational about how to get the job done.
So, I would classify this book as Advantage Craps Play 101, and let readers know to plan on shopping for deeper follow-up information.

No shortage of villains in this story

Peter Ralph is both a good writer and a good storyteller. When one thinks of white collar crime, one usually thinks of embezzlement, stock manipulation, insider trading and corporate espionage. This novel includes those financial crimes plus blackmail, murder, gambling fixes and drug running.

At first the story seems unfocused because almost all of the cast of characters are introduced in the first 10% of the book. Unfortunately, the Kindle X-ray function is not enabled on this book and would have been an aid early on in helping to keep the characters straight. However, after a few more chapters, the characters begin to become more distinct and they run the gamut from pinstriped executives to muscle bound street thugs. The author has a good ear and can successfully put a variety of nuanced speech patterns to paper.

The author uses a good blend of narrative and dialogue to move the plot along. The chapters are short and the book is divided into four sections. The first two sections slowly build the story. We have individuals making bad decisions and trying to find ways out of their problems. We have others using those faulty decisions to further their own interests. The last two sections are the most suspenseful as all the plot points come together. The story is nicely developed and well written from beginning to the satisfying ending.

Brilliantly written and totally gripping

A white collar crime is thought of as non-violent crime that is committed by someone of respectability for financial gain. In “White Collar Blackmail” by Peter Ralph, “The Wolf of Wall Street” meets “The Firm” as group of white collar criminals use brutal mafia tactics in pursuit of wealth. Todd Hanson, an accountant and mathematical whizz with numbers has developed a betting system that actually works. His success at the track brings him to the attention of villains who want to use insider knowledge to make a killing on the stock exchange. Falling into their clutches when his system fails, he accepts a loan to pay his gambling debts. He soon finds out that in this world of high finance, and shady deals his benefactors will stop at nothing, not even murder to achieve their ends. The fast- moving action of this novel and Peter Ralph’s personal knowledge of financial corporations gives “White Collar Blackmail” a unique authenticity. What a stunner ... I couldn’t put it down.

Another super Peter Ralph book!

Whenever I start reading a Peter Ralph book, I have learned that I need to make sure I don't have work to do for a day or two. His creativity and character development hook me from the first page, and I feel compelled to try to read it from start to finish. That's not always possible, but I do my best. He has the perfect background for writing a story that is almost believable. The reason I used the word "almost" is because I honestly hope that no one is really as devious or evil as he portrays. I LOVE his books and am looking forward to reading not only all that he has already written but all future publications. I am so happy I found him! He has already entertained me for hours and know I will thoroughly enjoy everything he writes. He takes me out of my paradise, island world into one that is quite exciting and stimulating. I highly recommend Peter Ralph's books to anyone who wants a terrific ride down life's highway.

Useful Information with a Well Done Layout

I am about to graduate from Northeastern and this was the book for one of my final elective courses, Consumer Behavior. I run several websites so it is absolutely critical to me to understand how web visitors think about content, make selections, and build affinities with brands. The book provided wonderful information in all areas.

The book is full color and provides a wealth of examples of ads, labels, and other material so you can understand what is being presented. You can see visually how some styles of promotions draw users in, while others repel the users to convince them to stop doing something (for example, using drugs). The book uses real life stories mixed in with theoretical explanations to help you explain the concepts.

There is a good mix of cross-cultural information, to help readers understand how marketing to an American audience differs from marketing to the Chinese, for example. It also delves thoroughly into sub cultures, from African Americans to tweens to Harley riders. It discusses the challenges of narrowing down social class in our mobile society. It discusses how buyers have ongoing "wars" in their heads between the rational decision making process and the emotion-driven pleasure center.

I enjoyed the book immensely and found much of its material immediately valuable for my daily work. I imagine most people who read this will find it helpful, if not for what they do for a living, then in how they themselves are being marketed to and are making decisions.

I have a minor "factual" issue I'd like to point out. On page 535 the author perpetuates the myth that we don't throw rice at weddings now because it makes birds' stomachs' explode. This absolutely is NOT TRUE. Birds eat rice naturally and their bodies deal with it fine, even when it's not cooked. There were no rice cookers in nature :). The reason churches asked people to stop throwing rice is that it's a royal pain to clean up.

So, that point aside, I do recommend the book.

I purchased this book with my own funds to take my class.

Very Insightful!

I bought this book as used and it came almost brand new. I love the insights that this book gives me and the pearson videos that link to it. I have learned so much from just reading this book and I have successfully started my own blog. I would recommend this for a teacher or any inquisitive person!

Not the book, but the customer service

This is a solid textbook. Explains most of what you really need to know about consumer behavior. But I didn't this review because of the book, but because I got the book from a_teambooks. These guys have the best customer service I've had online. They solved my problem in a pinch. If you ever do have to buy textbooks, buy it from a_teambooks!!!
