How to understand people better than they understand themselves!!!

"As the only one of its type, this program [or system outlined in this book] offers a complete, practical, easy-to-use system that you can use to measure a person's thoughts and feelings quickly, at any time."

The above quotation is found in the introduction of this fascinating book by Dr. David J. Lieberman, author and "internationally recognized leader" of human behavior and interpersonal relationships.

Be aware that the system in this book is not about reading someone based on their body language, their speech pattern, or how they dress. It is not about developing some mystical power such as telepathy. Instead, this book contains specific and proven psychological techniques that can be instantly applied to any person in almost any situation.

Is this system absolutely foolproof? Of course not. No system is. But you will gain a "statistical advantage" to reading a person by using the methods in this book.

The book itself is divided into two sections:

Section one (7 chapters) has techniques that will give you much insight into people, and will help you gain the advantage in practically every situation. Each chapter in this section is based on seven basic questions. These questions are as follows:

(1) Is this person hiding anything? (2) Does the person like or not like someone or something? (3) Is the person really confident or just attempting to play it cool? (4) How is a person really feeling? (5) Is the person really interested or are you just wasting your time? (6) Whose side is a person really on? (7) How safe, stable, and sane is a person...really?

Section two (8 chapters), my favorite section, actually goes beyond the basic techniques of section one thus giving you the ability to "peer into someone's mind to find out what [that person] is [really] thinking" and enables you to "understand a person better [than they] understand [themselves]."

Don't worry!! Lieberman gives plenty of real-world examples so you'll never be lost.

The system in this book allows you to gain much insight into a person's thinking and psyche without having to spend much time with that person. As Lieberman says,

"Once you become...familiar...with what to look for and what to listen to, your ability to read a person will become almost instinctual."

Finally, a fun feature of this book is that Lieberman provides an interesting quotation from others at the beginning of each chapter. Here are two of my favorites:

"Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." (Comedian George Carlin)

"Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open." (E. G. Letterman)

In conclusion, besides giving you an effective way of reading people, this book, as well, will most certainly give you a better understanding of human nature and thus more insight into yourself!!!

Don't buy this book if you really want to learn about this stuff.

This is yet another "buy-this-to-get-the-secrets" book aimed at corporate America, exploiting that mainstream desperate, competitive edge. But when examined closely, this book really doesn't give you any helpful tools to use in the social arena of reading others' sincerity; it is anecdotal, non-rational, and provides examples that are too narrow and templative to provide a deductive understanding of this concept. There are no photos at all, only insets of anecdotal fictions used to describe what the author says you should do. It amounts to an poser's list of conversational phrases and maneuvering tactics to bludgeon out responses from other people, and will just make you look like the confrontational equivalent of a Stephen Covey geek.

If you really want to learn how to perceive non-verbal stress, self-doubt, insecurity, etc., if you want to learn the *gestures* that exhibit these things, buy the book "What Every Body is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People." It is full of photos and it describes the underlying instincts causing all of them. Needless to say, it also has a more substantial and academic bibliography.

One of the top 10 self help books ever!

I have never reviewed a book before but I am so struck and disturbed by the cattiness and vindictiveness of Jen's "review" of a book, she admits to never reading,that I am writing my first one.

I am a lover of self help books. Name the big ones and I own it. I have read most of Lieberman's books and found them to be fast paced, insightful and easy to read. This book struck me as different because of the depth. The first part is cool techniques on how to read people and examples that make it usable and very relatable. I thought the part about how people use pronouns to distance themselves from events to be brilliant ( see page 34) Here is where I felt this book was different - the last couple of chapters were especially insightful and deep. It helped me to understand how self esteem colors the way we see the world. It helped me to understand what motivates people at the core and helped me to understand what motivates me. This is truly a OUTSTANDING book. One of the top 10 self help books that I have ever read.

Overall an easy to navigate and complete review for the VTNE

I used this book one month prior to sitting for my VTNE. It was helpful, but if you don't known your basic knowledge, this is not the book to review with. I think this is best used as a supplement if you already work in practice, or in addition to your class notes. I liked having a physical paper, that I could take with me on slow nights at the ER.

Pros:
-bullet point format, no lengthy reading required.
-lots of helpful charts/graphs/pictures, which breaks up the monotony of reading sometimes.
-updated information, especially in the section of critical/emergency care and diagnostics (blood/ua/cytology)
- code for use of online tests and practice
-has easy to identity sections to help you find which area you are looking to study
-quizzes at the end of each chapter, which I found the MOST helpful part of the entire book

Cons:
-the avian/exotic animal section (pets, not lab animal) has a lot of outdated or incorrect information, which can show up frequently on the VTNE
- there is not justification of the hundreds of answers to the practice test questions. In some cases I doubted the answer, or didn't know where to find the information to review in the giant chapter, so I didn't know why I missed the question
- the practice website leaves A LOT to be desired. The questions do not change, if you take a practice VTNE, it will be the exact same the next time, except the questions will be in a different order. Only useful for a couple review sessions. I wish it had the entire bank of questions from the book.

Overall, I found the book helpful in preparing for my VTNE, which I passed on my first try. Having used the Colville review prior, I preferred this review book over the Colville hands down.

Errors in Answer Key, Don't Waste Your Time or Money

I bought this book along with a subscription to VetTechPrep.com. I read a few chapters of this book and completed each chapter review at the end of the book. Unfortunately, I found numerous wrong answers. As far as I can tell, the information in the chapters is correct, it's just the answer key for the review questions has errors. After finding a few errors, I decided to stop reading (I stopped at chapter 12, there are 29 chapters total). I focused all of my studying on reading my school notes and completing VetTechPrep.com. I completely believe I passed because of that website. If you are a vet tech student preparing for boards, I wouldn't bother wasting time or money on any book. The VetTechPrep.com review was very in depth and gives you explanations for each question you answer. Plus, it helps to use an on computer review system since the boards are on a computer too.

Every adult in America should read this!

This is a true account of what happened in the years leading up to the Great Depression, 1919 through the 20's was an era that mirrors what our country is going through right now, socially, economically and morally. Corruption in government, declining values and morals, income inequality and greed. Presidents and Congresses that didn't pay attention or in Harding's case, one who didn't have a clue how to be a leader, sound familiar? Read it and see what you think.
This was written in 1931 so it hasn't been altered to make it politically correct for 2012, it's a true account of the decline in our society which culminated in the Great Depression.

About the Author
John McGahern was born in Dublin in 1934 and brought up in the West of Ireland. He was a graduate of University College, Dublin. He worked as a Primary School teacher and held various academic posts at universities in Britain, Ireland and America.In the opinion of the Observer, John McGahern was 'Ireland's greatest living novelist'. He was the author of six highly acclaimed novels and four collections of short stories, and was the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including a Society of Authors Travelling Scholarship, the American-Irish Award, the Prix Etrangere Ecureuil and the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Amongst Women, which won both the GPA and the Irish Times Award, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and made into a four-part BBC television series. His work has appeared in anthologies and has been translated into many languages. His last book, Memoir, was published in 2005.

Very well written and an incredible message for kids to hear. So glad they made this Young Reader version.

My 8-year old son reads a lot of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books and that sort of "book" :/, so it was such a breath of fresh air to introduce him to a book that is SO WELL WRITTEN, and has such a great message of perseverance and overcoming obstacles. The Audience Guide says 4th-7th grade, but I think even younger grades might be ok, especially if parents read it with, or to, their 1st-4th grader, as the subject matter in parts can be a little emotional, and a few concepts would be helpful to pause and talk about. (I wanted to pause and talk about ALL the parts!!) The way the book jumps from Joe's childhood to adulthood every-other chapter might be confusing at first if kids aren't familiar with that literary device. One thing that would have helped this confusion is if the book designer/publisher made the little icon of the rowers under the chapter # (which is ALWAYS the same) different for the chapters that have to do with his youth. For example, only use that crew/boat icon on the chapters about the UW team, but for the other chapters use a different icon/illustration that has to do with his childhood to help guide the reader when there's a time switch.

I have not read the original version, but plan to because this was such a compelling and captivating story. I hope they make a movie out of it, too.

An exciting piece of history brought to life for a young adult audience

Although I haven't read the full version of this inspiring true story and biography, I didn't feel like I missed anything in this young adult (condensed) version of the book. It has all the drama of excitingly described boat races, as well as the pathos of a difficult childhood.

I grew up about a mile from the Montlake Cut and the Husky Boathouse, where many of the events in this book took place (although my childhood was 20 years later). And I've been to, or near, many of the locations described here, and I found them to be true to the geography and history I know. I have a minor quibble with saying the boathouse is on Lake Washington, when locals would say it's on Union Bay (which is connected to Lake Washington). Also the area where Joe Rantz goes out in a canoe with is fiancée is Foster Slough, which is not named specifically.

I will be recommending this book to the teachers of Washington State history at the school where I am the librarian, as so many aspects of our state history are brought up in this saga: a childhood in various locales around the state, farming, logging, mining, the creation and building of the Grand Coulee Dam, and of course the development of a competitive rowing crew that became the first entry from Washington State in the Olympics, not to mention that they won, much to excitement of our whole state back (and much of the nation) in 1936!

A wonderful book for people of all ages

A wonderful book for people of all ages. An easier read for the younger set; however, all of the important messages are still included. It relays the hopes and dreams of those who came from a somewhat common upbringing to the World Stage of sports.
