When I reached 40, I thought I had already achieved all my dreams. I had a family, a home, and a job I enjoyed that allowed me to combine motherhood and a profession. I wondered what could possibly inspire me now. Well, I encountered the Angels and life has become a challenging, wonder-filled adventure where the bad moments, the nightmares, the falls from pride, the often shameful awakenings along with the surprising synchronicities, the awe inspiring dreams and visions and unexpected gifts turning up out of the blue lead to the knowledge that I am now empowered to cleanse my faults, purify my flaws, pay off some of my debts, transcend my distortions and develop pure qualities to rediscover my Divine self and to fulfill my purpose here on Earth. Detoxifying is not always very pleasant, but the benefits gained lead us to dreams beyond our imagination. As I approach 50, I can laugh at my 40 year-old self for I now have so many dreams itll take all this life for them to be fulfilled! When a friend went on about this book, I was skeptical. But, once I borrowed hers, I was amazed at how accurately it pinpoint people. Helps with understanding where someone is coming from and why they do things. It is so accurate, that I bought the book myself. Highly recommend.

This is an absolutely wonderful book! I found out about the 3 angels that have been with me since birth, and really began incorporating them into my daily life. They responded so beautifully and lovingly. I have also become acquainted with others and they have responded just the same. I love this book!

Ken Kollman is Professor in the Department of Political Science and Research Professor in the Center for Political Studies in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Whoever had this textbook previously did not take very good care of it. The binding is falling apart, pages are missing from chapter 1, and pages are slowly falling out. I've only had this textbook for a few weeks. Material/ content wise, everything is fine.

This book is so thorough that when I read it I didn't feel like I needed to show up to class because the prof didn't cover half of it but tested on all of it.

I was stunned and enchanted when I finally saw all that this book contained - - things I had wondered about, but never quite got around to asking were suddenly right in front of me, and the possibilities are truly endless. I might actually LEARN something this time. so far quite good for explaining things simply and quickly. good reference book. too bad it did not have more on windows XP but lots on vista. Big book though and you will have to spend a little time reading same but enjoyable reading so no problem.

"A Baton of Foundations"

I was gifted a copy of this book as a medical student when I did a 2 month rotation with several GP's in the UK (1971)...in New Castle, Barnard Castle, and Elephant and Castle. Their mentoring remains indelible, broadley opening my eyes to the covenant between doctor and patient...the mentoring in book continued to cement the overlaying strata of physical and mental health that I was to see as a Family Physician for the next 40+ years. I in fact considered initiating a Balint Group here outside Philadephia in the 1990's...no takers...as the business of medicine, coding, insurance, big pharma, specialty procedural and laboratory medicine overshadowed aspects of medicine that are basic and foundational to the practice caring professions. I recently gave the book to a young FP who entered our practice as I retired, and I hope he has the time to read and apply it before his retirement. The book is certainly dated in some ways, but the spirit of professional starring, supporting, mentoring, ...and doctoring "in the best interest of" is in it's chapters. Batons of this type are worth passing on, especially to those who have some insights into the calling of medicine. BCM

Punchline: Stick your leg out...

This book is a fun read, organized around research on lower back pain. It is 120 odd pages attempting to convince you, via well documented research, how important the Multifidus muscle(s) are (pronounced Mul-TIFF-i-dus)-- the long groups of muscles supporting the spinal joints. The punch line is the question: ok, what do I do about it?

Well, if you've ever been to the gym, and seen someone get down on all fours, then stick one leg out behind them, that's basically it. The exercises are that, alternating legs, then more advanced, sticking the opposite arm out, and most advanced, same deal, adding ankle weights. Not a lot about the important opposing counter-Multifidus group in the abs is covered, but one exercise is tightening the abs while holding the lower back straight, which shows this author knows what he's talking about in many areas of exercise physiology and mechanics.

I found GREAT bonuses in the sections on sets vs. reps vs. strength/ endurance, etc. in general, but if you're a minimalist, the leg deal is the punchline here. Highly recommended, one of the best researched books I've ever read on ANY topic-- guy is for real and NOT anecdotal baloney like many in this genre.

As I read it I kept wondering: ok, ok, what IS the exercise???!! Unlike the 400 page web offer that fails to recommend krill oil after teasing about it as a universal heart savior, this DOES have a well studied punchline, thank you!

Focused interventions for back pain

Johnson has assembled a respectably readable book focused on addressing back pain in the vast majority of the population. His emphasis on specific quality and rigor in clinical studies adds to the value of his recommendations. Far too often, "back pain" is evaluated from the standpoint of bone (disc herniation) and/or nerve disorders (spinal cord compression). When none of this anatomy is found contributory, then either the patient is relegated to the hypochondrical bin or is pigeon-holed into some variation of bone or spine issue that never addresses the real underlying problem.

Johnson's recognition of the critical role of the multifidus muscle is well supported by the medical literature. Unfortunately, there is little surgical intervention to undertake, so the orthopedic community is mainly at a loss for recommendations. In addition, while physical fitness enthusiasts emphasize "core" exercises, the multifidus and the transversus abdominus (TA) are not typically on the list of targeted muscle groups. "Core" exercises will usually emphasize, rectus abdominus (for the 6 pack), the obliques (for side profiles), and erector spinae (for the lower back). All of these muscle groups are involved in "core" movement, but the deepest of the "core" muscles are TA and multifidus which are the real support stabilizers. This is why this book is so different. No one is ever going to see these muscles no matter how much you work them, but they are integral to stability and a pain free spine.

The exercises are not sexy, nor do they appear particularly impressive. The only results you can expect is pain free movement and most likely less aggravation with other "core" related exercises. The advice is solid and does work.

I believe that this book is probably one the best solutions I've found to helping me with my lower back pain. I have been doing the simple exercises for one week and I am already seeing improvement. I highly recommend this book to anyone with back pain, but you need to read the whole book first.

A little interest boost for elementary school biology

Projects and activities to teach concepts, terminology, and (according to the author, Janice VanCleave) laboratory methods. This book and the others in the series each describe 101 experiments. For biology they are classified under plants, animals, and humans. Each is presented in a two-page spread with an illustration on the right. The order is logical. By working through the book doing some experiments and reading about the others, one would form significant concepts. An explanation is given for each activity. Growing carrots from carrot tops demonstrates that a plant can grow if it has portions of base, stem, and root, and if it receives food and water.
The explanations are oversimplified in some cases (for "finger monocle" for example). Younger students need simpler explanations, but I believe the scientific principles could be stated more accurately. Also, some of the illustrations could be improved, but basically the book is good.
For a total science program I would recommend a textbook or a number of broad topic books. Individual experiments miss some of the overall themes and some concepts are hard to demonstrate.
I have not seen evolutionary concepts in the book. It and others in the series seem best for about grades 3 through 5. Younger kids could profit from most of the activities. The explanations don't bring out the scientific principles clearly enough for older ones.

Never disappointed by a Janice VanCleave book

You will not be disappointed with this book! Janice VanCleave's Biology For Every Kid is divided into these categories: plants, zoology, and the human body with tons of simple hands-on experiments that you can do for each. I use these experiments all the time in my 7th grade classroom and the kids love them. Learning is so much better when it's hands-on! I would highly recommend this book for upper elementary and middle school science teachers.

An Excellent, Concise Resource for Science Teachers

As an experienced public-school science teacher, I find this book invaluable. Its contents range from simple, few-second demonstrations all the way to many-week experiments. Some of the experiments, such as the study of osmosis through use of salty water-soaked potato or cucumber slices, are commonly found in science books. Others, such as the spray painting and study of spider webs, and the counting of rings on fish scales to determine the age of the fish, are quite unique to this book.

Students can learn the parts of the bean seed, and how to grow yeast and bacteria. The book is profusely indexed. All experiments are each concisely listed on two facing pages. This makes it very convenient to photocopy and hand out to students--as when making suggestions for science projects.

I am delighted to see Why Men Rebel back in print. In addition to being an important theory about protest and rebellion it also serves well teachers who wish to illustrate theoretical levels of analysis and how theory can focus on one while engaging the context provided by others. Gurr's theory is sometimes over-simplified as a purely psychological theory. Yet it has a core focus on individual grievances within the context of societal norms and values as well as government capacity and repression. Few rational choice theories ground their analysis within social contexts, and few of the sociological or structural theories provide an account of the impact of individuals' beliefs or motives. Why Men Rebel provides not only an important theory of protest and rebellion, but remains today a model for developing a rigorous theory that engages the complexity and nuance that this topic surely requires. --Will H. Human Factor of Political Violence

In this influential writing, "Why Men Rebel" by Ted Robert Gurr covers the root causes of political violence, whether it is riots, rebellions, coups, or insurgencies, Gurr develops what is known as the relative deprivation theory. In this theory, essentially an economic argument, political violence is attributed to a discrepancy between what men and women think they deserve and what they can actually get in society. The resulting frustration culminates in incidences of collective political violence by social groups.
