ALMOST Perfect

The Alfred courses are awesome. They quite literally taught me how to play the piano to the point where I can grab any piece of beginner's sheet music and start playing. The CD is an invaluable tool because it helps me verify that I'm playing the right notes at the right tempo, etc. My only "complaint" is that the cd has accompaniment along with the piano playing, so while I'm playing the notes, I'm also hearing a violin or something playing totally different, complimentary notes. While it certainly sounds better that way, the whole reason I wanted the cd was to hear the piano and the piano only. At such an early level, the sounds of all the other instruments are really just getting in my way. Maybe once I'm into the third book, I'll want accompaniment, but for now, not so much. All in all, the CD really helped me and I'm glad I got it. Highly recommended!

Sales Prospecting for Beginners

Mixed in with many rather boring stories are little pearls of wisdom that all beginners in sales require. I have yet to hear any sales person or trainer NOT say "Learn about your client", "Listen closely to what your client says", etc. The basics are certainly there. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much more than that. Creating distinctive marketing segments, creative approaches to prospects, analysis of sales successes and failures, along with all of the techniques required to become a top salesperson - except in real estate I guess, are sadly lacking. I expected much more from this book.

Not very informative

Most of the text is war stories meant to glorify the author. He has no experience at selling outside the field of real estate. Because of that this book has little of interest to those not in that field...and not that much for those in it. If you sell real estate there are far better books out there for you on how to build your business. If you sell something other than real estate this book is of very little use. Mr. Hopkins primary talent seems to be that of promoting...primarily himself. It may well be that his blend of self promotion played well in selling real estate years ago, but he is not a student of selling and is not in touch with the real world as it now exists. There are much better books out there on prospecting.

Grade 6 Up What on the surface appears to be just another medieval fantasy peopled with animals enacting the fight to the death between good and evil is actually a rich and thought-provoking novel on the nature of good and evil. The peaceful life of the mice of Redwall Abbey is shattered by the onslaught of the fierce rat, Cluny the Scourge, and his army of rats, weasels, and other vermin. The mice and the other peaceful animals take refuge in the Abbey's strong walls while Cluny lays seige. Advantage is with the besieged (as long as food and supplies last), and the Abbey defenders are able to withstand numerous attacks. Cluny cannot be completely defeated, however, until the sword of Martin, the legendary warrior who founded Redwall Abbey, can be found. A young novice, Matthias, embarks on a quest and ultimately finds it, but a wise cat reminds him that it is just a sword. It attained its legendary status because Martin used it only in the defense of right and good. Just as Martin's sword is neither good nor evil, the characters avoid being simply personifications of attributes. The defenders, even Matthias, have faults, while even Cluny displays characteristics which make him not likable, but at least deserving of a grudging admiration. The book is violent, and at some times downright gruesome, but the quality of the writing, the rich cast of characters, the detailed accounts of medieval warfare, and Jacques' ability to tell a good story and make readers think all earn Redwall a place on library shelves. Our family loved the Redwall series back in the 1990s

I bought the first 3 books in the series as a gift to a friend for to read with her grand kids.

Our family loved the Redwall series back in the 1990s. We started in about 2nd or 3rd grade as read-to books. Very imaginative characters. This is a great way to learn about Medieval times using personification of animals as the characters. Great vocabulary builder. Soon became read alone books for my son, but we still enjoyed reading aloud together as a family due to the engaging story and memorable characters who move forward into the next book. (Violence refers to battles of animal groups - done with a Medieval Times theme.)

Redwall by Brian Jacques

Redwall is the first volume in a series of 15 books that Brian Jacques wrote for a group of orphaned blind children in Liverpool, England that was fortuitously published. It is stated to be for a youthful audience, but it is my experience that it holds charm for all ages. It is beautifully written, well constructed and the tale delightfully resolves so that the reader comes away pleased and reassured that the time was well spent reading the book.

The world of Redwall is good and caring, the way we would want the world to be if we could have an environment where those around us cared for the well-being of each other and those who were evil were well defined and doomed for defeat. The characters in Redwall are forest creatures from a mythical and medieval time. The scenes are set in an abbey and a forest. From there we are invited to follow the machinations of those who live in Redwall Abbey and those who try to destroy the tranquil life of those who inhabit the abbey.

I used the book with advanced non-native speakers for the charm of the book, the fast-paced plot and the delight of both the the characters and the well-written language. I question whether this series will go down as classical literature, but as Dickens has made his mark on English literature, I suspect that Jacques may well find his place in English literature also. There is also a video series on YouTube that makes it easier for students to follow the flow of the story should they wish to use it. t

Children find the story engaging; my students were equally delighted with the novel and I was pleased to find something that kept the interest of my students as well as building their vocabulary base.

Great for gifted 4th and 5th graders

These were just coming out when I was a kid of that age and everyone loved them. As a college student, all my friends read these as kids and loved them. Then around mid-high school we all went back and read them for another familiar happy re-read and realized they are really terrible - cliche, terrible writing, fake drama. But kids LOVE them. So it's not good for read aloud as adults will lose their minds. But so meaningful and fun for kids. You do need to be a good reader/book lover for them as many of the characters have accents or dialects that are phonetically spelled with lots of apostrophes and such. This tripped up my brother at a young age. Also you should be able to skim or else kids may get bored with long descriptions of scenery and food unless they are into that.

Biagioli here views Galileo's career in a new light. Instead of the traditional view of Galileo as the "new scientist" championing the Copernican cause against the Aristotelians, Biagioli presents a convincing argument for Galileo as the courtly gentleman whose patronage goals drove his scientific work. Biagioli begins by describing how client-patron relationships worked in early 17th-century Italy, how Galileo used those social structures to advance himself from artisan to university professor to Cosimo de Medici's Court Philosopher and how his actions helped raise mathematics and natural science to a respected position. Biagioli then discusses how patronage guided scientific discourse, ending with Galileo's eventual downfall. Though scholarly, this superb book is a joy to read and provides new insight into the history of science.

controversial but important

I read the Shank-Biagioli dispute the reviewer mentions. If you accept Shank's critique, it undermines one chapter but not the entire book. For anyone interested in Galileo, scientific patronage, or religion and science, this is a must-read. Even if you do not agree with everything Biagioli says, his book has been incredibly influential.

Biagioli's courtly and covert jab at the Historians of Science.

This is an alarm call to Biagioli's own field of the History of Science: highly controversial, groundbreaking and brilliantly crafted. His subversive work of critical Historiography is housed within a text about the history of Science, and its surface focus is Galileo's court society context. But careful and clever readers will find he is taking structures of science, History practices, and the modern university to task. He blends theoretical reflection with historical analysis, incorporates visual evidence alongside textual proof, and forces alert readers to confront a series of assumptions concerning Galileo and early modern science that, over the years, have calcified into articles of faith. Perhaps most importantly, he opens up imagined barriers to generate further scholarship. Both directly and indirectly Biagioli challenges his readers to stretch their framework and test his ideas.
And what does he get for this dangerous shot into the crowd?... Why tenure at Harvard, as he should.

Other reviews here focus--quite rightly--on the main narrative issues, and with them it is best to learn about the upper bulk of this book. But the heart of what Biagioli is up to was beautifully demonstrated by another critical reviewer here. That reviewer supplies the perfect quote to illustrate my point and Biagioli's deeper project:
"from Michael Shank's review (Shank, Michael H. 1994. Galileo's Day in Court. Journal for the History of Astronomy 25:236-242.) and Biagioli and Shank's later exchange on the book in Early science and medicine Vol 1, 1996.
Shank concludes, and I agree, that Biagioli manipulates the evidence and does not "behave in the way in which good, honest, historians behave"."

Shank (and the other reviewer) responds in this typically defensive and indoctrinated way, because Biagioli's inspired use of Historiography does by definition take ossified historians to task. The book reveals the limiting problems inherent in intellectuals refracting in EXACTLY this way: Biagioli "does not 'behave in the way in which good, honest, historians behave'." Conversely, Biagioli follows intellectually rigorous curiosity, and divergent methodology, and thus arrives at valid conclusions that modern scholarly disciplinary strictures often preclude.

According to Shank, Biagioli has breached an imaginary and obscurant "moral historian code," by pointing his finger back at historians. That's actually hilarious: Shank thus proves Biagioli's subtextual argument, which was built in through the entirety of the work. If one reads this book carefully, understanding Biagioli's allusive use of a complex combination of footnotes, his purpose is clear and would threaten the bejesus out of any "trained" thinker who is cemented in the status quo.

Writers looking for a template on how to shake up a system while working within the confines of it--look no further.

It was a turbulent and confusing time. As British and American politicians struggled to reach a compromise, events on the ground escalated until war was inevitable. McCullough writes vividly about the dismal conditions that troops on both sides had to endure, including an unusually harsh winter, and the role that luck and the whims of the weather played in helping the colonial forces hold off the world's greatest army. He also effectively explores the importance of motivation and troop morale--a tie was as good as a win to the Americans, while anything short of overwhelming victory was disheartening to the British, who expected a swift end to the war. The redcoat retreat from Boston, for example, was particularly humiliating for the British, while the minor American victory at Trenton was magnified despite its limited strategic importance.

He introduces readers to the 1776 that Washington experienced: one of continual struggle both to create a working army and to defeat the British. The victories that he met outside Boston were soon followed by defeat and near ruin around New York and gave rise to the realization that 1776 might easily have become the worst year in the history of America. McCullough not only provides readers with some of his best work yet, but also presents an important look at one of the most crucial moments in the history of the United States. A more-than-compelling history lesson

As a proud American who, I'm ashamed to admit, knew next to nothing about the details of the Revolutionary War, McCullough's "1776" was a much-needed history lesson for me. Written lucidly and grippingly throughout, "1776" provides a strong foundation for one's study of this most critical period of our nation's history, and has inspired me to continue my own studies by reading as much as I can about the revolution and its meaning, both then and now. One also comes away with a sense of awe toward General (and later President) George Washington. The extensive bibliography that McCullough has provided is more than enough for a lifetime of study.

I think that those Americans who read this book will, like me, feel more strongly patriotic and value more greatly the selflessness of those who fought for our country in its infancy. And I think that non-Americans who read it will better understand what it means to be an American, and hopefully see our country in a more favorable light. Yes, I realize that America has its problems, both currently and historically, and that we're certainly not beloved by everyone throughout the world, but it's nonetheless moving to at least try and perceive what we mean when we talk about the "American spirit": that feeling of unbounded liberty that allows us to truly pursue happiness. "1776" offers a path.

Not for the faint of heart

McCullough weaves together historical data and excerpts from letters and journals to create a narrative of this crucial year in American history. Beware that it is not for the faint of heart. This is not the glossed over history you learned in school. To be sure, it includes many proud and heroic moments, but it also shows Washington and his extremely ragtag army as human beings with all the faults and frailities. In this book we get not just the triumphs, but also the mistakes. This is not a case of trying to make anyone look bad, but it's probably a more unbiased view that most of us were raised with. You might want to be sitting down when you read this next bit ... Washington was not a god. He was hampered in this first year by a lack of officers with any real experience (seriously, one of his best and brightest, Nathanael Greene, was a very young, former bookseller with NO previous military experience), and little practical backing by the Continental Congress. But even so this account includes some painful mistakes. Still, the victories were very sweet, and those moments when the rebels rose to the occasion are glorious.

Really readable but some Kindle quibbles

A really readable, interesting account of the events of 1776, even if you're not usually drawn to detailed accounts of military encounters. I was fascinated by the military strategy and the challenges faced by the Continental Army and the British. As another reviewer noted, I was really kind of surprised and disappointed when the book suddenly ended - it didn't make any sense that it would have to end where it did, other than being limited to the year 1776. And what, no map? At least I couldn't find one in the Kindle version - not that the maps ever translate very well in e-readers, in my experience. But a map is really needed if you're not intimately familiar with the geography around Boston/Cambridge, New York City/Long Island, or Trenton.

Another maybe Kindle-related issue that make my review less than 5-star was that if you consult the %read indicator at the bottom of the Kindle page, the book ends at 50%. (That probably contributed to my surprise and disappointment at the book ending where it did.) The remaining 50% is photographs, which probably would have been helpful to include in the middle of the book (don't know if that's the case in the paper-printed version), as well as lots of notes/annotations/references/bibliography, as expected.

Lincoln Peirce has been drawing the Big Nate comic strip for more than 20 years. Born in Ames, Iowa, Peirce grew up in Durham, New Hampshire. As a kid, he began creating his own strips in the sixth grade. Peirce taught high school in New York City and has created several animated pilots for Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. He lives in Portland, Maine, with his family.

Big Nate Gets the Grade Review. (Very helpful)

I would recommend this book to anyone in range of 4th to 9th grade. The book description said that he got better grades than Gina and he did not. So only for that reason do I take away a star from my rating. It really shows what Nate thinks of school,girls,teachers,and homework. I really enjoyed this book and will probably get another one in the series. In the book Big Nate Gets the Grade you see how funny Nate is, see him get detention, trick the school secretary and more! I recommend this book to all who wish to laugh and follow a 6th grader through his journey in middle school.

Nate is well-known in school by his friends and suffering teachers of his behavior and mischief he always gets into. He also knows very much about detention. However, competing with the intelligent Gina on test grades is simply not his style, but will he change his mind and surprise everyone? This funny story will grab the reader's attention to find out what Nate is up to. School life with Nate and his pals entertains, is delightful, and enjoyable. The Big Nate Comic Strip is popular, and the author has contributed animated pilots for cartoon TV shows. Highly Recommended!

Awesome but...

Other people say "Sexy" is a bad word. Some people say it's the 'S' word. It's not a bad word. It means pretty. Although, you shouldn't say it all the time. It might be inappropriate for Preschooler's or People who don't know the meaning of the word. On the other big Nate reviews I've read, it says, "I read my class this book and it said 'Sexy' and that was totally inappropriate." It's not really. It's kinda like the word "Crap." It doesn't mean a bad thing. It means "Garbage." But with the "B" word, that's different. Its like calling people a butt, meanie face, bully, etc. That is a bad word and you shouldn't use it. So I recommend these books for people ages 9-100. Thank you and goodbye!
